Here is the story of how my gorgeous lil' man Caden Lee arrived... :)
On Sunday 23rd December it appeared that I had lost my plug. I was also having a few twinges but nothing serious, very much like what I had been feeling the couple of weeks before. However my Mum was adamant that I was going to have my bubs that night or the next day (maybe a Mum's intuition?). That night DH and I decided to take some last-minute photos of my BIG belly, as well as some of the 'three' of us, just in case our lil' man did arrive earlier than his EDD.
I woke up on Monday morning (Christmas Eve) about 6:55am and my waters broke (thankfully I was out of bed when it happened!). It was a little scary  as there was some blood in the waters so I rang the hospital straight away. They asked if I had felt bubs move recently, in which I realised I hadn't since the night before, so they advised that I come in as soon as I could to be checked out.
DH and I got to the hospital at about 8:30am. Luckily my obstetrician was actually already in the hospital so he was able to come and see me straight away. He checked me and bubs out. Bubs was great with a nice strong heart beat, and he said that I was already 3cm dilated, things were definitely happening and that he wouldn't be surprised if bubs arrived any time from 1pm to 4pm.
Things started to move along not long after that, and by 11:30am the contractions were a bit 'bitey' (if that's a word to use to describe them). The midwives asked if I wanted any pain relief, but as I really didn't want an epidural I said I'd try the gas. Well, that didn't work for me. After one suck I was sick :barf: ... yuck! On the next contraction I had another suck and again was sick. So it looked like it was no gas for me. I still didn't think I was in too much pain for an epi so I had nothing.
By 1:30pm my Mum and two sisters arrived (I really wanted my Mum to be there to see her grandson be born), and I must admit things were heating up by then... ouch! I went for another hour but by 2:30pm I was really in pain, to the point that I told the midwife that I might have an epidural. She said that she'd examine me first as I was going so well without one. When she checked me she said that I was 9 to 9.5 cm dilated and that bubs would be here within the hour. With that in mind I thought that I could go on for another hour without anything. But boy, let me tell you, it was tough! (I'm in awe of women who do this numerous times!!!). Then before I knew it I had the sensation that I really needed to push, so I told the midwives as I wasn't too sure if I should be. After another quick examination the midwives said it was definitely time. My obs then arrived and I got in position to push my lil' man out into the world.
So after another hour of mind-blowing contractions and pushing, our lil' man Caden Lee arrived at 3:41pm. One part of the delivery that I remember so clearly is the point where Caden was suspended between the world of still being a part of me and the big wide world outside. His head was out and I was waiting for the next contraction to push again. The midwife asked if I wanted to feel my baby's head, which of course I did. I looked down and could see his little head, and I softly touched the dark little head. What an awesome feeling!
In total my labour from waters breaking to Caden arriving was just over eight and a half hours. Active labour (when I started to feel the contractions) was about four hours. Caden weighed in at 3.390kgs, 50cm long and a head circum of 33cm. All ten fingers and ten toes present, as well as all other parts that he should have too!
To describe the feelings that I felt when I finally saw Caden and was able to hold him in my arms is so hard to put into words :cloud9:. I just know that I have an abundant amount of love and joy for this little person, this little miracle that my DH and I created with our own love . I feel so honoured and blessed to be given the opportunity to be a parent. I just hope that I have the ability to be the best mother that I can be. And I know that I will always cherish this gift that I have been given :bee:.
Thanks for reading my birth story. Just to write down my experience has allowed me to again realise how lucky we all are to be blessed with the gift of being parents.
