I had a baby girl a week ago and she is beautiful and healthy, but she was quite big at 9lbs (4 kg).

Does anyone know if this means she is more likely to be a big child or whether it balances out by a certain age. She was 2 weeks over due as well.

Thanks
Georgina :)

I had botha 9lb's 13oz kid and a 10lbs 4 oz kid (both boys) and i have to admit my boys balanced out, DS2 actually didnt put on more than 2 kg's in the first 6 months and they were worried but i kept saying he looked like a normal kid, and his cousin was 3 months younger than him was like heaps bigger than him.

IMO genetics play a bigger role as to what size a child will be rather then what size they are born, there are so many factors that can contribute to the size of a bub when born.
(not including all premi or sick bubs though, as they are a whole different kettle of fish, im talking in general)

it does make sense that genetics would play a bigger role doesn't it.

Thanks for everyone's replies - I guess its just going to take a wee while for all the differences from birth weight to balance themselves out. :)

My DS was 4 weeks early and 13lb 2oz. He is now nearly 5yo () and 117cm tall, 18kg and very normal in size!

My DD was 3 weeks early, 8lb 7oz. She is now nearly 7yo (double ) and 122cm tall, 18kg and a little skinny mini!

Genetics has a heap to do with how your bub will turn out and birthweight really doesn't have much bearing on anything. My DS took until 4 ½ to triple his birthweight which is what they are supposed to have done in their first year/18mo - he just had plenty of reserves as a bub and was a very tall baby. It was just a pity to leave hospital at a few days old with a bub that everyone assumed was at least 4mo!

My son was 2 weeks late and born right on 9 pound. 15 months later he is a feather weight. Maybe weighs 11 kg and still in size 0s. Genetics have to play a big role in both. My family has a history of having big babies born but no one was really big as a kid.

My DS was 10lb 3oz born. He was always above average, still is. He is a tall boy and very active. Recently he got sick and went of food for 4 days, he was lucky that he had 'reserves'.
I too believe that genetics have a huge part. I have 2 friends, brother and sister both born over 11lbs and they are some of the fittest people i know.

Ds#1 was 8Ib 11oz and by 6mths he was on the 25th percentile for his height and weight. He is now almost 3 and is a lot smaller than most kids his age.

DS#2 was 9Ib 7oz. He is now 6mths and is right on the 50th percentil for height and weight. I think he will be 'average'.

My DS was 9 lb 4 oz born and I must admit, he is a fair bit bigger than kids his age. When I say bigger I mean taller, bigger hands & feet etc but he is a skinny minny- I can literally see his ribs  He's not a very big eater but I think he will always be a big boy like his dad.

His little friend from playgroup was 9 pounds born and she is now the smallest of all the toddlers her age.

I really don't think birth weight has much bearing on future size

i agree with other posts..i dontthink birth weight reflects how big they will be..i would go more on the contributing parents genes. Both my girls were over 9lb ( 9lb3oz and 9lb 5oz)...i can only go on genes..dd#1 is tall with a lrge foot size she is 11 and wears a ladies size 9(larger than me)..her father is tall and im not short either...i do think because they have been a healthy size since birth has also contributed to the fact that they have rarely been sick..so reserves certainly help imo..also healthy food..

My second child was almost 9 pounds and 2 weeks overdue. His head was huge and still is. He is skinny and tall at almost 5 years of age. He has never been chubby.

DS was 9lb 15oz at birth - we joke that he has been on a growth spurt since conception. He is just over 6months now and is 11.5kg which is way way over the 97th percentile. We've had some challenges because he's so big - the most recent being I realised that the weight restriction on the bassinets in shopping trollies is 9kg so we need to try to put him in the little toddler seat next time.

Neither I nor DF are what you could describe as 'petite' but we're not that big either

My son was 10lbs but he is very tall for a 2 yr old. People often gasp when I tell them his age.

My daughter was big at birth and she is now very tall but not big weight wise. She is perfect and well proportioned.

I had my oldest son Jayden when i was 18, he was born 9`11. I could not believe it as i did not have a big belly.
My second son Joshua, i has when i was 27 and he weighed 8`13. :)

Both my babies were over 9 pounds. Now, at 2.3 years and 14 months, they are both skinny binnies. My DH was 8 pound something, and as a kid he was super skinny and tall. He's grown to be a quite tall man, so I'm guessing that they both take after him, as both kids were 56cm and 58cm long born.

I agree, its genetics!

That sounds like my family. DS was 9lb 9oz and DD was 9lb 5.5oz and both now are feather weights.

I was 9lb something at birth, average sized child - and now I"m spot on average as an adult too - average height, average weight etc.
