my baby is nearly 4 weeks old. since this week, she vomits out after every feed. I burp her after every feed, even then she vomits out after 5 mins after feeding. btw, i m breastfeeding. also, some nights she will cry non stop. her face goes red, she throws her arms n legs around. Even when i feed her during those nights, she keeps stretching her body in a weird way, sucks really hard and lets a cry out every now and then. She looks like she is in so much pain. this has started this week also. What can it be?

Also, she makes grunting noises and stretches her body a lot at night. Is this normal?

Sounds like reflux. Have a look at the reflux threads on this site. Hope I have helped.

It could just be wind but it could also be reflux.

Also remember when b/f what you eat will affect your breastmilk so that could also be an issue. Some babies are really affected by what we eat.

My suggestion would be to try changing your diet or at least watching it & then doing things like keeping her upright for 20mins after every feed, change her nappy before a feed if possible otherwise wait until the 20min period to make sure you dont upset her tummy. When changing her nappy roll her to the side to get the new nappy on etc dont lift her legs up into the air cause again this will upset her tummy.

With her feeding trying a different position can help her be more comfortable to feed. Many reflux babies prefer the 'football' hold as it means they are somewhat upright. Also try to stop her snacking even though with most babies this isnt an issue it can be with reflux babies as they arent getting the fatty hindmilk. The foremilk causes them more pain so if they are getting too much of this it can lead to crying & vomitting. Often expressing a little before each feed can help with this. Also try to stick with a light routine with feeding again not usually the norm or something advised when b/f but with a reflux baby they often comfort suck to help with the pain but then cause they are getting too much milk their tummy's overfill & cause them more pain. So often a good thing for a reflux baby is a dummy but i totally understand if you arent willing to try this yet but trying to hold out feeds a little longer will help with some of the pain.

Try using a sling through the day to help her sleep or settle her even through the nite cause this way she feels comforted being close to you & it also means you can still get things done having your hands free. It also means you can feed on the go once you master it !

If she is in a cot or bassinette then try raising the mattress a little so its got a slight angle to help keep her that little bit upright when laying her down. Also try not to lay her flat as this causes them a lot of pain & also helps them regurgitate which can lead to vomitting or just causing them pain which leads to crying.

Alot of unsettled babies also like being in rockers as it soothes them so if you have one maybe try this out. My DS1 slept mostly in his rocker as a newborn right through to 3mths of age as this was the only way to settle him.

If things continue & you feel it isnt right them i suggest you get a referral to a paediatrician & have your lo looked at.

Hope the above can help a little !

if bub vomiting big amounts or prejectile the reason i ask is ther is a condtion called pyloric stenosis that can cause this if he is prejectile vomting i would take him to eh ER sdo they can do a scan not trying to scare you chances of it are very slim 1 in 1000 boys one in 4000 girls but stil beter to be on the safe side

other then that is does sound like reflux so either way i would go to the pead or a GP

I agree with the others, it sounds like it could be reflux. Definately check out the reflux section & talk to your CHN/GP. We are lucky that DS doesn't have painful reflux, but the amount he pukes you'd swear he has nothing left in his tummy. With some babies they can actually puke up everything they eat and have trouble with weight gain etc - so definately keep an eye on that & speak to a health proffessional.

thanks ladies for all your help. My doc is away on holidays. So I gotta wait till she comes back. Almost all surgeries are closed. She seems better now. I usually give her 1 formula feed at night. I stopped that. She seems a lot better, thank god. It could be the formula.
