I'm having trouble shaking of this flu and have got a very annoying cough that is keeping everyone up all night.

I've been using vicks to clear my nose - what can I safely use for the cough? I need to sleep!

My chemist told me that the honey lemon strepsils were safe to suck on (short term) when I had a sore throat (dammit .. why do we get so sick when we are fat???)

there would be something you could suck on .. while drifting off .. just double check at the counter ... (there are lots of things you can use SHORT TERM... and lots of things you need to avoid - sigh)

I dont know if that helps  - the only other option is to kick everyone else out of your bed!!

I get terrible coughs all the time.

- Take a bottle of water to bed with you.
- I find vicks vapodrops ease my cough
- Sleep slightly proped up if possible, ie so your upper body is slightly raised.
- A hot drink just before going to bed like camomile tea

:hugs:

I hated being sick when pregnant - was the worst. took ages to shake stuff as your immune system is supressed...

i did the following:

steam inhalation
panadol
rest
fruit and vegies

Sorry - there is nothing else that helped

argh... I was hoping for some amazing safe super drug that could fix me up.

I'll try these and stick to sleeping on the couch (which is so uncomfortable!)

bah!

If it is a rattly cough (coughing up chunkies lol) try lying on a bit of a head down slope, on your front (if you arent too preggy) or side and have someone firmly and rhythmically whack you on the sides of your ribcage, through a towel, with cupped hands (the cupping stops it being a slap and makes it more comfortable) get them to do it for 5 mins on each side as firmly as is comfortable. It should break up any yucky stuff in your lungs so you can cough it up.

if its a dry cough, try having some honey and lemon juice dissolved in hot water, and inhaling some vicks.

Theres not much else we are allowed to do!

Why don't you take honey with a little bit of ginger juice in it. It might taste a little bitter at first but its quite effective.

When I was desperate with the flu back in August this year the Dr said I could take a codeine based cough syrup. I only took it at night every few days, and only because I was dying for some sleep

It helps to keep the room REALLY warm and humid too. Get a humidifyer, and keep the room heated to at least 22c. Have a nice warm steamy shower before bedtime.

Stay well hydrated, keep a glass of water by your bed and try not to drink icy cold drinks. Hot drinks sooth your throat.

Thanks Nex - I'll get some syrup today.

The coughing has gotten so bad that its making me vomit now. I'm pulling my hair out over this, I just want to be better!

Thanks for the other suggestions girls..... but I can't stomach honey at all so I'm all for the meds. LOL
