hi guys,

i'm now 5 weeks and 4 days today, and had some cramping (like period pain) and noticed some old brown blood yesterday. Went to Emergency and they said that my cervix is closed and took blood to check my QBHCG to check my pregnancy levels.

i have to go back tomorrow for repeat bloods and a scan to see whats going on. Has anyone out there expereinced the same thing, and then there pregnancy continued on as normal?

Im just worried i'm in the early stages of a miscarriage, i know that some woman bleed through there pregnancy but it's hard not to worry

Pippa :(

I had the same thing at about 10 weeks - it was like a dark brown discharge. Thankfully I was able to have an u/s within an hour and saw the baby looking fine! I am now 35 weeks and had no further problems apart from some dark "tan" looking discharge (sorry bit gross!) along the way, which hasn't turned into anything. I also had LOADS of period like cramps throughout the first trimester. Good luck :)

Hi there!

I had what appeared to be a period at what would have been about 4-5 weeks in to my pregnancy. Hence I was actually unaware I was pregnant. Imagine my surprise when I found out I was pregnant and was going on 9 weeks! The bleed was right on cue with my period. But when I think back, although there was a bit of blood, it was brown, which signifies old blood. Anyway, when I did find out I was pregnant through a blood test ( I was sick at the time and the doctor did a blood test and checked for pregnancy too) he sent me for an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy and to see that everything was okay as I mentioned the 'period' to him. At the time I was quite worried, but thankfully everything was okay.

But, get any bleeding in pregnancy check out. Even if it turns out to be nothing, it is best to double check.

All the very best and hope that everything is okay.

Hi

I had bleeding through the first trimesters of both my first 2 pregnancies (am crossing my fingers that it doesn't happen this time). In my case the blood was red, not a lot of it, and seemed to occur when I strained to go to the toilet (was constipated). Then at 11 weeks with both I had huge bleeds, but no cramping at any times. I worried all the time this happened, but the rest of my pregnancies went fine.

If you're feeling nauseous that's a good sign that your hormones are working really well, so try not to worry.

Thanxs guys,

I hope I have as much luck as you did. I'm trying not to worry but of course it's hard not too. I go back for a scan and bloods tomorrow, but I don't know how much the scan can tell because it's still early days and they usually can't see the heart beat till 6-7 weeks.

Keep your fingers crossed for me and I'll keep you posted

Cheers Pippa

Hi Pippa,
I hope your scan was okay today and everything is fine. I am 14 weeks pregnant and saw some brown blood when I was 10 weeks but was told not to worry and that it is red blood that is more concerning. I had a miscarriage at 8 weeks last year and it was definitely red that time and was a constant bleed. Apparently the brown blood can come from your cervix which is highly sensitive in pregnancy (from having sex or being constipated of being too active I was told) and I was told not to worry about it too much (and thankfuly haven't seen it since I saw it that one time). Good luck with everything - I really hope all is okay with you.

Hi Pippa,
hope the scan went well. I had this in my first pregnancy usually if the cervix is still closed is all okay and darkish in colour as you said. I just found out I was pregnant a few weeks ago and have just experienced a miscariage you will definately know if its something more. The bleeding Is bright red/pink in colour cramping lower back pain and you pass clots and the cervix is generally open. Hope this puts your mind at ease, sounds like it will all be okay to me! Good luck with your pregnancy hope all goes really well :)

Hi Keyansmum,

I'm sorry to hear about your miscariage. We went back to the hospital last night, my BHCG has increased which is good, and they did a scan but couldn't see a heart beat but i'm not quite 6 weeks yet so of course they arn't going to see one, so we have to go back again on Monday. I haven't had any more spotting since wednesday so that is a good sign but I just hate waiting. I am just worried which is natural. Anyway fingers crossed for monday. I hope all goes well for you and you fall pregnant again quickly.

Hello I am the proud mother of a 4yr old boy and a 8 month old baby girl both pregnancys i had bleeding at the start, with my 4 year old it was only at the 4 week mark so at first i just thought i was getting my period, only when it stopped short i did a preg test (postitive of course) a blood test to check levels confirmed but then i started with the cramping like i was going to get my period again but my O&G told me this was normal esp. in 1st timers, it is the uterus stretching but a ultrasound was done to ease my mind it wasn't eptopic. Then with my daughter it was so different I had bleeding light at first at 4 weeks then it stopped only the start again at 8 weeks this time so heavy that i had to wear a pad it was in Jan 04 one of those really hot high temp days i was very worried and then i went and had another scan to confirm the heart was beating and all was well i did have another bleed and thank goodness that was the last time. But i can not stress enough if you are worried see your O&G or GP or go to the hospital and don't leave until you feel peace of mind, it is you body and your baby thats what they are there for.

Hi all,
I am looking for some advice on early signs. I have only been off the pill for about a week or 2... after a couple of days I felt the most bizarre things in my tummy. My husband laughed because I describe them as kind of "squirmy and squiggly". A few days later I had my period (preceeded by horrible tummy aches and diaoreah (sp?)) but the period was only kicking into a stead flow on day 2, and was gone on day 3 (it can go for 5-20 days usually). Today there was not the usual after period spotting, and I got a little nauseous on the train. This turned into a pretty bad bout of travel sicknes which has been coming and going all afternoon and evening.
I am currently feeling very flat and a bit sick, and when I eat or drink I get these sudden revulsions for the food/drink.
Sorry to ramble so much, but if any of you could read through that jumble and let me know your opinions? Many thanks for your time :p

Hi Shellz76,

I can completely understand what you are going through at the moment. My pregnancy was plagued with several bleeds which scared me also. The first was at 5 weeks which, like you, appeared to be old brown discharge. After having a u/s it was established that the blood was due to the sac embedding in my uterus lining. The next bleed was at 6 weeks. This blood was much brighter and after yet another u/s (when I saw the heartbeat for the first time), discovered it was due to a perigestational hemorrhage. I did have another bleed at 25 weeks which to this day my OBGYN has been unable to establish the cause of (it may quite possibly have had something to do with straining a little too hard on the loo!!...TMI). And 7 1/2 weeks ago I gave birth to a beautiful little girl.

Please remember that bleeding during a pregnancy does not always mean that you have lost your baby. And in most cases a miscarriage is accompanied with quite severe cramping pain, bright blood and sometimes what appear to be clots. I would strongly suggest that you see your GP as soon as possible in order to establish the cause and also check on the development of the embryo.

Feel free to PM me if you need to have a further chat regarding this.

Sticky baby dust to you Shellz76,
Sonia.

shellz76, I too have had bleeding during my pregnancy. At 6 weeks, 6 days (after about 3 days of spotting), I went to Emergency because I passed a clot that looked like a piece of tissue (and looked like a tiny baby) and they did two internal exams. I was told that it looked like I had miscarried - of course I was hysterical. Then the doctor went and got a more senior doctor, who came in and told me he had to do another internal to "clean it all up" in there and take away the remains. I was balling the entire time, but then to my surprise, he announced it just looked like old bleeding from the vagina and the cervix was still closed. He did another internal and confirmed all was ok, which the blood tests for the hormone levels confirmed. He did say that the piece of tissue/clot could have been a twin (though I don't like to dwell on this too much). I was then sent for an ultrasound the next day and we saw the tiny little bub for the first time and the heart was beating (at around 118bpm).

I then had light bleeding at 11 weeks, but the doctor told me it was nothing - "some women just bleed, even for no reason" - and then again at 18 weeks, though it was quite heavy then. Again I was sent for an ultrasound, as they feared that I had a low lying placenta or a placental abruption - it turned out to be perfectly fine (and I found out during this ultrasound that I'm having a boy!).

I have now been told that during pregnancy your uterus grows many new blood vessels and in some women these pop or burst more readily than in others. I am in this category and whenever I experience this spotting/bleeding I have been told to rest for 24 hours until after the bleeding stops. Of course, if you have bad pain or much heavier bleeding (that soaks a pad) you should still go to the doctor for reassurance, and they will probably send you for an ultrasound.

But the point is that not all bleeding results in a miscarriage - some bleeding is fairly common apparently (which I found quite comforting to know).
