Hi everyone, hope you can help me out with some advice.

I am about 8 weeks pregnant and about to commence a new job which is a casual position. I am really worried about when I should tell them about my pregnancy and if it will affect their judgement with keeping me on. I want to keep working close to my due date.

This is a Customer Service role that requires me to be on the phone a lot so it is not a physical job.

I know that it is illegal for them to sack me over being pregnant but I am sure that employers can find other "reasons" to fire you, especially as a casual employee.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should handle this ? I am the kind of person that likes to be up front with others although in situations like this I understand that that timing is important.

You're right - legally they cannot sack you for being pregnant but YES employers DO find other "reasons" to fire you when you're a casual (or full timer for that matter).

My opinion - I'd probably wait until your at least 3-4 months, then in writing tell them that you are pregnant and when you would like to work up until and discuss this with your boss.

Basically you will HAVE to (at some point) tell them, so its no point avoiding it really. It's gonna happen at some point or another - its just up to your boss whether they are going to be accepting of it or not. And if they are not accepting, I'd make sure they know that you know your rights as a pregnant worker.

Its a sticky situation, but legally, as you said, they have no reason to fire you.

All the best with this :)

You never know your boss may be completely understanding! Their are alot of understanding bosses out their!:D

I would wait until you are in the 2nd trimester to tell them and as mentioned above I would also mention to them when you would like to finish up working etc and that perhaps you may or may not be interested in taking up that position if it is available when you have had bub!
