View Full Version : Request permission to ask a silly question re MCN fabrics...
I believe most MCNs are made of fleece - is this because it's more absorbent that terry towelling? I want to make some more but was wondering why terry towelling seems to have fallen out of favour. I'm thinking TT would be cheaper and probably easier to sew.
My first home-made MCN (ok, class-made)

wow that is cute well done!!
i am still learning how to make them myself but i have been using two layers of polar fleece ithen use a booster of some kind i have some PUL here now though so i can start experiementing more :)
I've been reading that fleece is used because it 'wicks' which means it draws the moisture away from baby's bottom and keeps them dry.
There's no reason you couldn't use towelling, but it would hold the moisture nearer the skin.
Does anyone have any other reasons fleece is used?

dont worry - there's no silly questions :)
basically there's two types of "fleece" that people will talk about in regards to mcn - ABSORBENT fleece (like bamboo fleece, hemp fleece) which you want inside the nappy to absorb wees, and NON-ABSORBENT fleece (like microfleece, polar fleece) which doesnt absorb any moisture, but depending on the thickness of the fleece, will either let moisture go through it to the absorbent layers beneath (which is what microfleece does) or will go on the outside of the nappy and stop moisture coming through to wet bubs clothes (which is what polar fleece does).
there's nothing wrong with cotton terry towelling - but alot of people have found that its either not absorbent enough (ie you'd need more layers of terry towelling to absorb the same amount as fewer layers of hemp or bamboo) or that its too thick when lots of layers are used.
and also, depending on where its bought, terry towelling FABRIC (not towels themselves) can be quite expensive.
hope that helps some - keep asking questions :)
ahhhhhhh, I see :)
Thank you ladies
