This is a little premature, as my baby is only 2 weeks old, but I was wondering how old your baby was when you first took it camping (if at all), or how old you think they need to be?

I saw a travel cot by phil and Ted the other day, that is designed for camping, and it made me wonder (it looks dingo-proof too!). We'd love to get back out there as soon as we are able.

Any thoughts welcome.

Hi there fellow camper,
Our DS#1 was about 4 mths when we first took him camping. DD was about 6weeks. We go 4wding and camping quite a bit and have decided that DS#2 is ready for camping-he's 11 weeks old, but not 4wding yet. I put my foot down on that one. It can wait until spring. In reality camping is not a lot different to sleeping at home just different rooms. As long as you are not too isolated I don't see any problems with babies and camping. Have fun if you go!

Thanks Sal.

My hubby also loves 4wding and we carried on until I was bbout 34 weeks pregnant. After that it was just too uncomfortable and worrying. I think DD needs to be quite robust before we start that again. How old was your DS/DD when you started 4wding again or haven't you?

I guess you're right about the 'different room'. I always feel rather unhygienic when I'm camping, but with some decent antibacterial handwipes we'd probably be OK.

We only started 4WDing a few years ago so DS#1 was 4 and DD was 2. Friends brought their 12 mth old with us last year and he seemed to strong enough. You did well making it to 34 weeks and 4wding-I think the last trip I did I was about 26weeks! My belly was pretty huge though.

Heya

our son is 7 months old and went camping for the first time two weeks ago. He really enjoyed himself and was fine in the tent - I put his playmats out and his toys in the front section and he crawler around having a great time! We could have gone earlier with him though I'm sure. we just weren't organised enough!

I think that if YOU as a mummy and daddy feel comfortable with the bub then go for it. The biggest thing is being away from your creature comforts and the things that you're used to, which with a new bub you may rely on more than you think while you're getting the hang of parenthood... but if you feel happy and confident and don't mind being out of that comfort zone, then go on, pitch that tent, whack up that Phil and Ted's portacot and away you go! :D

Actually, on the cot, our friends have it and swear by it, but we found that an el cheapo Toys R Us jobbie worked a treat - after all, the tents are all mozzie screened and UV screened these days anyway!!

Enjoy your camping trip!
