has anyone else heard how there changing the nursery rhyme baa baa black sheep to baa baa rainbow sheep?
I think this is so silly, this is by far one of the least worrying politically incorrect things our children are taught, and I feel if it were baa baa white sheep, then there would of been no problem with it. Though there isnt much difference.
I dont think i will ever get it :banghead:
what are other people thoughts on subjects like this?

I don't think it's that much of a big deal:confused: The words of kid's songs and rhymes are changed all the time. Kids don't care, it's all about the rhythm and rhyme. The only people jumping up and down about it are grown-ups, going on about "the scourge that is political correctness"
I personally think a rainbow sheep is great! :yelclap:

I totally agree - this is political correctness gone totally wrong AGAIN!!! The thing is, there are black sheep - have you ever seen a rainbow sheep? I for one havent  How ridiculous, kids are going to grow up thinking that there are mutlicoloured rainbow sheep!! Aaaarrrrggg!! I agreee, this wouldnt be an issue if it was a white sheep, next thing, they will take the colour blck off the colour chart!
I think it's a little silly. plus rainbow has an extra syllable, so it doesn't flow as well

Reminds me of the episode of Desperate Housewives with the school play where they wanted to change the ending of Little Red Riding Hood. It is just plain stupid. Also what about Mary Had a Little Lamb - whos fleece was white as snow - is that racist against fair people and should they also change that to rainbow fleece:confused: Where does it end?
Liz.
How silly, for starters no it doesnt sound as good. And a question for any parent out there.....If you drive past a paddock with a white sheep in it and a black sheep and your child questions the difference do you not answer or tell them they are the same when clearly there is a difference. My concern is that when a child gets old enough to understand the difference...yes it is only colour but does this not teach a child a very wrong message. it is not embracing society but closing our eyes and hoping by the time we open them it will all be sorted. Our responsibility as parents is to teach our babies the difference and how they are to embrace each other.
This is really a very silly idea. IMHO:shame:

The nursery rhyme dates back to the 1500's and it's actually talking about paying taxes in sheep...one for the master and one for the dame...
It's nothing to do with the colour of the sheep...it's ridiculous that people have nothing better to do than look for 'hidden meanings' in children's nursery rhymes, when they're simply not there!
It does not make any sense to me - in fact I think that objecting to the use of the word black is bigoted in itself. It is as if someone can not differentiate between genuine racism and the use of the word black so just wants to remove the word.

Hi everyone,
I agree totally, I heard this on the radio this morning and thought it must have been some sort of joke. It is getting too silly now. They sould just leave everything alone, it didnt affect us in anyway growing up so why should it affect this generation or generations to come.
Where will it end - remember they had problems with Noddy and Big Ears, GollyWogs, there was a thing about Humphrey because he didnt wear pants.
I say if its not broke dont fix it - rainbow sheep, what will they think of next.

EXACTLY!!! Why can't they understand that?
On a little side note, I find it interesting that black people can call themselves black people without a drama, but the second a white person refers to them as black people, they kick up a stink? Gets my goat every time.

I guess it's for the same reason that if a woman calls herself a b*tch it's no big deal, but if a man calls her a b*tch then it is a big deal.

Why couldn't they make it something that ryhmes at least, like "baa baa pack of sheep"................................
Does anyone know if they have changed the words to the Kookaburra song, I was singing it to my kids the other day and thought one of the lines would surely have had the "political correct" police on to it
It goes........Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree :ecomcity:
Laugh kookaburra, laugh kookaburra, gay your life must be
Here is a link to a news page that a friend sent me; Quite funny!
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,18389736-2,00.html
They had people rewrite rhymes to be PC.

lol i was just singing that song to my kids the other night and they looked at me like i was an idiot, i said dont you know that song, they said nup, i felt upset and said what the hell are they teaching you kids at school these days. I even started singing kookaburra sits on the telephone wirebut they didnt know that either

That is soooo not the same thing!
Hi All
I think that it is the context that the word is used in, rather than the word itself which is important (and that also solves the b*tch dillema:D ). So my opinion is that it is stupid to remove words that may be used by some ppl in a hurtful way, as ppl can be hurtful with the most PC of words.
Much better to spend time teaching empathy and tolerance. I think that any time spent on re-writing nursery rymes for such spurious reasons is a waste of time. Have they got NOTHING better to do. It'll never catch on anyway...
I agree totally about the context thing.
I think this whole thing is racist to white people!! (joke)
Love,

oh shhhhh Chelle, otherwise the religious right will start in on it......:p
this is all so stupid.
Kids aren't aware of the political incorrectness stuff and they really don't care. Kids wouldn't think, "ohhhh, it says black sheep, they must be talking rudely about a black person".
I mean, c'mon!!
Why does our children's innocense have to be taken away by these left-wing conservists? It's utterly ridiculous!
I certainly didn't think that Noddy was gay coz he slept in the same bed as Big Ears. I still didn't when I was an adult until someone thought of the idea. And who cares anyway?!?!?!
Sorry, I get really amped up about this cr*p.
Hey the rainbow sheep can go and hang with that kookaburra and the Flinstones. They'll have a gay old time...yabbadabbadoo :D

OMG
I thought my friend was joking when she told me this morning. I just laughed at her and said there is no way my child is going to think there are rainbow coloured sheep I will still be singing ba ba black sheep.
We even asked someone to make her a black gollywog (she also has a white one) I can't stand all this political correctness.
How are they supposed learn that it doesn't matter what colour a person is they are still the same on the inside.

Personally, i think it's a bit silly too...but then i'm not really being affected by it!
I would like to hear from someone of colour, to see how they feel....if they ARE offended? I'm assuming everyone who's posted so far is caucasion?
Black sheep seem to get along just fine being black and would probably be quite peeved to know they've lost their place in history to the homo-sex-uals.

So that's what that smell was!
We're on a sheep station and we sell any lambs that come through with black wool or even small black spots. You aim to produce white wool with no colour in it- even creamy wool's not so good, so it's easy and even to dye for the clothing producers. Does this make us racist against the black sheep!!??
My daughter has a Glow Worm Night light doll and the words have changed to be PC and inoffensive with the nursery rhymes it sings..For example:
ORIGINAL:
"Rock a bye baby on the tree top, when the wind blows the cradle will rock, when the bow breaks the cradle will fall and down will come baby cradle and all"
GLOW WORM 'HAPPY UP BEAT' HOLLYWOOD ENDING VERSION:
"Rock a bye baby one the tree top, when the wind blows the cradle will rock, when the bow breaks the cradle will fall but mommy will catch you cradle and all" Awwwww....:hugs:
Arhhh, much more positive:rolleyes: :D
Milly, I love the Glow worm version. That's gorgeous.
Blah how ridiculous, we won't be singing about rainbow sheep in our house:thumbsdown:

My DH is Indigenious and sometimes (when joking around with friends) refers to himself or others as N******, However if I was to do this (I would never!) but if I did Im sure he would be very offended!!!
Does that make any sense? hope so lol:o
On the topic of the black sheep I have no problem singing that song to my son, sometimes I change it to white sheep other times I sing black sheep, no big deal really!
I do want to say one thing though, as I child I was taught the nursery rhyme "eeny meeny miney mo catch a N***** by the toe" shocking I know, but no one ever told me this word was wrong OR what it meant and the horrible images it produces etc. So in my innocense I just kept on singing until one day a child half my age pointed it out..........you can imagine my horror that I was using this very offensive word.
My point is I think its great our children dont understand all this political correctness stuff BUT at the same time if we dont teach them these things then they may be offended people left right and centre without even knowing about it!
Does that make sense lol its too early in the morning
One more point.......I think children (just like the rest of us) see that people are different, they just dont neccessarily point it out and make a big deal out of it.
I once asked my DH "how will Orlando know he is black?" silly Q. I know LOL but as my son is very light in colouring (unlike his father) I was curious.....
DH's response "Because we'll teach him" :D

And this is all proof that you can't read into the rhymes too much!
I bought my daughter a black sheep from Ikea, it's one of her favourite rhymes. She hugs it to sleep! :)
gee next they will change the name of the colour of the pencil.
like its not a black pencil or black crayon or blacl texta or black sheets or black shoes.
PMSL what teh hell is it then , i think they need to take a step back and reevaluate the situation as my kids all know the rhymes the way they have always been and they will not be forced to change how they say if someone who is black (no racism intended) cannot handle how they made the rhymes up or the colour black up. sorry but there are more important things to worry about not a friggen colour.jmo:banghead:

and yes that word is racist.

No need to genetically change the name - genetics are about how something inherits its properties - names are whatever we give them. As you will see from this link Fish (http://www.shoalhaven.net.au/~shafc/Species/luderick.html) the term N***** is not the proper name for the fish anyway - it's correct name is LUDERICK or its species name is Girella triscuspidata. So no problem with removing that racist term from common use!

LOL, I agree totally.....will every song with the word black in it have to be changed too??
Black Velvet - Rainbow velvet??
Black or White - Rainbow or WHite (or would it be rainbow or rainbow:rolleyes: ??)
Men in Black - Men in Rainbow??
LOL Black Sabbath could be Rainbow Sabbath?? Im sure they'd be really impressed by that! We could watch "Rainbow Adder" on the ABC, oh, and the "Black" album by Metallica would have to be affectionately called "Rainbow!"

why are they comparing black "sheep" with black "people" anyway. The song is about sheep plain and simple NOT people.
if you are wearing a black pair of shoes do you say they are white or rainbow coloured just so you don't offend someone??? I think it's just ridiculous after all this time to go and change a song.
are they going to change all the nursery rhymes that are violent too:
...Jack fell down and broke his crown...
what about poor old Humpty Dumpty ...HD had a great fall all the kings horses and all the kings men couldn't put H together again...
Three Blind Mice ....she cut off their tails with a carving knife...
Rock a bye Baby ..down will come cradle baby and all...
I could go on with more but you get the picture - they are all silly little songs that we've all learnt but have any of us gone out and done violent acts because of them.
when I sing Baa Baa Black Sheep I think of black "sheep" not a black "person". Are we now going to be referring to black people as rainbow people now or are we just going to change the whole human race and not distinguish between Asian, African, Caucasian etc. we will all just be called "Rainbow" people.
and as for Humphrey not wearing pants when since have you seen a bear in the wild wearing any... or wearing a hat and tie for that matter.
all these things are just a bit of fun for kids and little children do not have the intelligence to distinguish anything other than what is presented before them.
....and, they are talking about the black sheep in a positive way:thumbsup: He had 3 whole bags of wool:thumbsup:
 Katie, you crack me up!
You forgot we'll have to have the 'Rainbow Sea' and AC/DC would sing 'Back in Rainbow'. We could go on forever!

I was once reprimanded at work for the last line in that song too "...and one for the little boy who lived down the road" I was supposed to say "children". :banghead:
Mind you, I have sung "Baa Baa green sheep with my friend's daughter a few times, after the millionth reading of Mem Fox's very cute "Where is the Green Sheep?" book.
In Australia it is called blackfish, luderick or n***** the reason for this is they have a black stomach.luderick (blackfish, n*****, darky) [girella tricuspidata(the actual scientific name of the species is, girella tricuspidata) so unless people are going to go around and say that well sorry but the other names are what people commonly know them as and people who call them that probably wont change.
gee we better get onto google then as when you type in nig### fish the whole nig### comes up heaps, especially where it is intended for racism and not just a name so hey where will it stop??????

I think you are missing the point. While I think that changing the words of a nursery rhyme is ridiculous, defending the use of the word "n******" on the grounds that "everyone does it" is not a good argument. People call that fish n***** because it is black - this is not an argument to make it acceptable, it is an argument that proves that the use of the term n***** is racist and based on colour. Perhaps you need to step back and think about why you think it is acceptable to use the term which most indigenous people find incredibly offensive and demeaning. While not wanting to offend, of course.

back to baa baa BLACK sheep though it was first started in 1744 and more than likely dates back to the 13th century and it relates to a tax imposed by the king on the wool. so therefore it is not racist as history proves itself.:yelclap:

I have been trying to reply to this thread all day, but have been having trouble opening any pages!!
pumpkin, this particular fish would have been nicknamed 'n****r' fish in a time when it was acceptable to use derogoratory terms towards black or indiginious people, times have changed, and therefore the nickname is no longer acceptable, it is a horrid word that was used as an extreme insult, yes it is fine to say 'that fish is black' or 'the lady had one white and one black baby' it is not ok to say 'that fish is a n****r' or that 'that baby is a ******' because they are black, do you understand the difference?

yes but they the term to be racist and the fish are spelt totally differently so unless you are having trouble spelling then it cannot be classed as racist the term for the fish.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree then, just because the word is spelt differently doesnt take away the offensive meaning behind it.

I don't care how its spelt, the word is racist and should be bannnnnnnnned.
gee thats a bit of a joke as it is spelt differently what are you going to want to ban everything that is spelt differently but can mean the same thing?? well goodbye coon cheese two meanings there. pmsl at this. Also the fish is not black the stomach of the fish is black.so they are not saying it off the outside colour of the fish.
you are still missing the point  noone wants the word banned because it is spelled one way or another, or because the fish only has some black on its stomach, the word shouldnt be used because it is a horrible, oppressive word that was coined when black people were viewed as not even human!! to continue using the word, whether referring to a fish, person, whatever, simply because they are black in colouring, is offensive and wrong.
Oh I just wanted to clear up one more thing, the cheese coon, is not called this because it has something to do with Aboriginal people, if it did, it would be racist, hence giving something a nickname that is also used as a deregotory name towards black people because it is black (or has a black stomach:rolleyes: ) is offensive.

I must admit, I'm psml too pumpkin...that some people can't get the point
Words do change in meaning. We all know that the word "gay" has had a new layer of meaning added over the last 30 years or so. As the meaning of the word gained an added definition, the way in which it is used by almost everyone has changed as well.
So while the "N" word may have been tolerated in the past, societies' view of its acceptability has now changed. Language is a fluid, living thing. I think that most ppl adapt and change with it.
Cheers
Actually the word is spelt the same way - but Coopsntilly and K.M are right - no matter how it is spelt the word is still racist.

Again you are using a ridiculous argument - we are not talking about a word with two meanings. We are talking about a word with one meaning, that was coined as a racist term a long time ago. It is used because of that meaning and for no other reason.
Getting back to the rainbow sheep, my husband and I think it's so silly and over the top. We've 2 black dogs, Daisy & Willy, and we keep cracking ourselves up and calling them rainbow dogs!!

Lexismum, we are not taling about the word 'black' none of us have a problem with that, we are talking about the word 'n****r'
hhmmm.. maybe another thread should be started then, i didnt start this one get get into racial arguements about the N word, i just thought it was so wrong changing the word black in a childrens nursey ryhme. That will probably start more problems then the word and ryhme itself.
Lexi
I think we all agree that it is ridiculous changing the words in the nursery rhyme. I suspect that Pumpkin is never going to back down on her position over the use of the word n***** and I know that I am not so let's laugh about the rainbows and close the thread. Sorry it got hijacked.
