I have just put Olivia to bed on her tummy for the first time. When she went down at 7 tonight she was really unsettled, possibly wind, so I put her on her tummy and she settled straight away. Now she just woke up for her feed and again, she settled straight away on her tummy.

It was okay at 7pm because I could check on her, but now.......I don't know if I will sleep. Having said that, she keeps me up all night anyway.

Does anyone else put bubs on their tummies? She is one of those anti roll pillows too. I really don't know, should I put her on her back just to be on the safe side? She is 6 1/2 months.

if she can get back to her back by herself she should be ok just make sure theres no pillows or teddies to suffocate on.

I"ve posted this several times on bubhub (I read all the tummy threads :) ) .. my DS has been a tummy sleeper since 5 weeks of age (he started to sleep through the night once I let him sleep on his tummy) - he loves it and will NOT sleep on his back ...

I do pray every night that nothing will happen to him (I am quite paranoid about SIDS) - but I figure that I follow every other SIDS rule (bumpers/ toys/ position in cot/ no smoke etc) - and that he is just a tummy sleeper.

you will probably get up several times to check on her  we are ALL paranoid mummies :) - if she can roll over I wouldn't worry!!! she should be able to sort herself out!!! (we watched our DS gather up the blanket one night and smother himself - we stood and watched - and he was able to fix it himself... so we feel better now) - I think lots of times we underestimate our bubs!
:hugs:

I hope you and bubs sleep well ...

Thanks veve, the only problem is, she is wrapped from waist down, which I guess is no different to a sleeping bag. Also though she still hasn't mastered rolling from front to back. She can do it, just not a fluidly as back to front. i also have her in one of those anti roll pillows, which I had her in as she was sleeping on her back. Should I take her out of it? I figure at least she cant move around as much making it a good thing?

all my kids have slept on their tummy! They sleep all night that way, must be comforting against the sheets.
I sleep bub in a long sleeved/legged jumpsuit so i don't wrap, there is nothing in the cot except him. I would leave her wrapped now. Can she turn her head ok? If so she will be fine.

Oh yeah, holds her head ( and body) up nice and high. I went and checked on her earlier and she was face down, but woke up straight away. That was good i guess, although a tad scary.

maybe flip her on her side if you are not comfortable with it...sleep her on her tummy during the day for awhile until you feel better about it.:D

Thanks JenNT, I will probably end up doing that.

My mum said in the days before SIDS was even recognised, I and my sister both were tummy sleepers.

I think if bubs can lift head, roll over and have nothing in the cot to smother her then you should be ok.

Having said that, side sleeping is prolly the best option for both bubs and to put your mind at ease.

good luck!

Bubs slept on his side from pretty much day one he refused to sleep on his back so we used to safe n sound sleeper for this & had no dramas this got the boot around 6mths cause he wiggles too much etc & from then on slept on his tummy ! No matter how often i turned him he would always go back to his tummy ! So even now he is upstairs asleep on his tum :D
As the others said if she can turn her etc & wiggle i wouldnt really stress too much but just make sure there is nothing that can catch her like a sheet etc.
I have found keeping bubs in something like a sleeping bag makes me sleep better hehe.
Im sure she will be happier this way as it seems its what she is choosing.

It sooooo reassuring to see that other mums are just as worried about tummy sleeping as i am.

My son has just started to roll back to front in wake time. It seems once he figures something out he continues to use it....very determined to be on the move.

So the last 3 nights i've caught him putting himself on his tummy when he is settling in the cot. I've gone in and put him back on his back. But i have to repeat this a number of times before he goes to sleep. Then last night....i had to check on him- mother's instinct- at about 1am. YEP...on his tummy. I put him on his back and he went to sleep. I got up again at 3am....YEP...back on his tummy.

I'm worried because he's still being wrapped....and i'm concerned that because he doesn't have free movement of his hands that he can't roll back again.

I'm in two minds...do i let him tummy sleep, but put him in a sleeping bag now? Or..do i wrap him and put a tight sheet over him to stop him from rolling over? Last night he complained when i put the sheet over him...because he wanted to turn on his side and couldn't. I believe he turns because he's got wind pain and it's not so painful when sleeping on your side.

Sorry this is a long post....but i'm so worried about him sleeping on his tummy.

Is there anything i can do to help him? What are peoples recommendations?

Mrs Little - Olivia has only stopped being wrapped, thankfully, that was no easy task in itself. I then put her in one of those anti-roll pillow. It worked for awhile, but then she started moving around, on her back, funny thing was the pillow would roll with her because the velcro stuck to her
When I put Olivia on her tummy, she slept the best she had in months. I think mainly for us,it was because she could reach for her dummies, which is what I believe always woke her up.
I would probably try getting her out of the wrap so she can support her upper half, making it safer and less worrisome for you.

I hope this has helped a little, let me know if you need to know anything else.

Both of our boys have slept on their bellys since they could lift their heads, it's the only way they would sleep - can't blame them really I'm a tummy sleeper too!

Both of my girls started sleeping ontheir tummy of their own accord when they started to roll over (about 5-6 months). I left them to it as I figured they could lift their head up and roll onto their sides and from back to front so they were going to roll back over no matter how many times I flipped them back over.

They say that after 6 months the risks drop dramatically as bub has more control of movement and it is okay for them to sleep on their tummy.

Rule of thumb - if they can put themselves there while they are sleeping then it is okay to leave them on their belly.

I would take away the anti roll pillow and maybe try sleeping her on her side but you 'll probably find she'll roll onto her belly from there anyway!!

Don't worry, the "rules" are really guidelines - and they'll probably change in a few years. My mum was told that we shouldn't sleep on our backs coz we could chuck & choke.

There's always something - I say just do what sorks for you. Babies are really instinctively smart - I trust that DS knows exactly what he needs and when...

My two boys are both tummy sleepers. When DS#1 was born, he screamed the place down whilst having his first bath on his back. We flipped him over and he went to sleep in the bath on his tummy. Little one sleeps beside be anyway, so I don't really worry about him. I am a tummy sleeper too and have been all my life.

my dd sleeps better when she is on her tummy too. one of the reasons i used to get very little sleep when i was pregnant was because i couldn't sleep on my tummy. i think if they put themselves there they can stay that way. i mean they obviously weren't comfortable on their backs. use a long suit or a sleeping bag so you don't need to have a wrap or blanket in the cot with them and they will be fine.

I would take her out of the antiroll pillow - it may actually prevent her from getting her head up - they are only meant to stop babies rolling on to their tums, not the other way around.

My DD2 started sleeping on her tummy at 6 months - she also started crawling at 6 months so there was no way I could keep her on her back. 11 months later she is still a tummy sleeper - but once they are strong enough to lift their heads and move a bit the risks, as I understand them, are lessened. Definitely make sure no toys etc she can get caught up in and you should be fine.
