View Full Version : Q: Falling on belly @ 27 weeks

I was sleeping on my couch (coolest room in the house) when my phone rang, so I jumped up & RAN to answer it & fell flat on my stomach on the (hard) lino! I only have a little damage (a lino burn around my belly button & leg), but I'm REALLY worried about my baby!!
The ironic thing is this happened to a lady at work's daughter not long ago when she was 32 or so weeks pregnant & I swore I'd be more careful! lol. Anyway, she ended up having to go into hospital for observation a number of times because the baby wasn't moving as much as she was before the fall. However, my little one has no set routine to when she moves about, so how do I know if I should go to the hospital? I rang my SIL & she reckoned only if I had pains in my belly/ if I got any bleeding...
Please advise! I'm pretty worried about my little one ;)

I would go to the hospital/gp just to get a check up anyway! Better to be safe then sorry!:)
Hi there
If it was me I'd go to the hospital for a check up just to make sure bub is ok,and to put my mind at ease, otherwise I'd be stressing about it.
Let us know how you go.:) :hugs:

I had a similar thing happen to me with my first baby. I went straight to my GP and she had a tricky little heartbeat monitor that she let me listen to the heartbeat which was a big relief. I don't care how many people say that the baby can't get hurt while it's in there!!!
I would make fast tracks to you local GP / or hospital birthing area / or even emergency ward (only if no other options though as you would have to wait) and explain what has happened, and it will honestly only take someone 2 minutes to hook you up to a monitor and then you will know. Hospital antenatal/birthing area will maybe give you a bit more serious attention, but if they don't then try the other options.

Hi KiLLaKaZ,
As far as I've read in the preggy books, the uterus is designed to take a bit of a battering, so it protects the bubs if you fall. Unless you're seriously injured yourself, they say the baby should be okay.
Still, your little baby is so precious, and its not worth taking any risks - I'd call your doctor or hospital for a medical opinion to put your mind at rest :) .
Hugs :hugs:

Hi you poor thing i know exactly how you feel. When i was about 30 weeks pg with dd i tripped over the join in the carpet and landed flat on my belly. I freaked out and went straight to the Dr's and they checked the heartbeat and everything to make sure the baby was fine and she was perfectly fine, but if it would ease your mind go and get checked out, the dr won't think your being silly they all say it is better to be safe than sorry. :fingerscrossed: Hopefully all is okay, i imagine it should be as they are very protected in there.

Thanks for all your replies! I will go offline so I can ring the midwives at the hospital & see what they think :)
I'm getting an occasional kick, so bubs seems ok, but the other girl who fell over also got the occasional kick...!
btw, what's with this?! :barf: ewwwww
but, keep you opinions coming - i'm interested in what you have to say, esp. if the midwives reckon i don't need to be checked out till my next appointment (this friday)

The midwife told me to eat some food/ have a cold drink & if bubby didn't start moving to ring back!
Well, bubby has started to kick a little more, so I guess things are fine - but I'm still worried (as any mother would be! lol)! :(
Should I wait till my appointment Friday, or try to go in tonight?
If I go in tonight I have to get one of my ILs to drive me 30mins to the hospital! & for those who don't know, my husband & I have separated, so it's a little awkward even though they say they are willing to take me. I don't know anyone else rin this area! :crying:
I was running for a bus, tripped and rolled across the road when 6 months preg. My midwife said to go in for a check.
For your sake and the baby's I would go straight away. You are the mum and your baby depends on you. I am sorry if it sounds like i am telling you what to do but i have been there. It would be absolutely horrible if something happened. Everyone including midwives give their opinion but if you feel like there is something wrong, it would be worth being checked. There is no harm in that.
All the best. Hope everythings okay.

Hi Killakaz,
hope all is ok with you and you were able to have it checked out.
I remember when I was 5 months preggers I went to step off the train on my way to work and my heel got stuck in the grooves where the door closes and I lost my footing and toppled over onto the station platform. I had my bag and 2 kgs of grapes that I bought on the way to the station and when I was falling I tried to put them in front of me to cushion my fall but didn't do a good job and I fell onto my stomach.
when I finally got to work (the heel on my shoe had broken off and the station attendant wanted me to write a report out of the incident) I rang my dr and told him what had happened and he said that unless I had pain or bleeding that I would be ok. He said the uterus has its own built in shock absorbers and as I was only 5 months shock absorbers together with the fluid would protect the baby.
all was ok and I had no pain or bleeding. If you haven't been to see your dr yet and you still are worried I'd go just for peace of mind.

I fell up our stairs to our house on the Friday (didn't tell anyone as I was embarressed and worried) and ended up in labour on Saturday and had Hannah on Sunday.
But don't worry I was due on the Saturday anyway so I'm putting it down to coincedence and that I would have gone into labour anyway.
Bubhub is the first time I have actually mentioned it come to think of it now.
If at all concerned go the hospital (they won't mind hooking you up to the monitor).

I understand why your worried. I would have been the same. :)
I have heard that amniotic fluid is the WORLDS BEST shock absorber. :) Nature has created the perfect solution for your bub to swim around in and be protected by. The baby should be ok.
Keep smiling and take care! :p

well ppls - i just got back from the hospital!! the first midwife i got ahold of didn't seem too interested in me coming in, but the second time i rang (a few hours later) they said to come in straight away!!
anyway, they hooked me up to a monitor for AGES because the baby's heartrate went down to about 90 three times so they had to keep going till they had 20 minutes of a good heartrate!! finally we got it! lol.
THEN they told me i had to stay overnight for observation! so, my poor SIL had to go back to my house & grab PJs & other stuff for me!
they checked Q.'s heartrate again this morning & it was all over the place (within the healthy range) - which, they said, is what they were after!
but, i was told i cant work tonight or tomorrow night! so, i'm gunna be short on cash next week (i think i have no more sick days owing!) :crying:
one advantage to all this - i now know what the hospital is like! & i have a better idea of what to pack in my labour/ hospital/ baby bag ;) & i'll be much lessed stressed out coz i know how friendly all the staff are now! :D (they're constantly on their toes making sure everyone's okay, especially if any babies are crying!!)
Hi there
I'm glad you went, and I'm glad that everything is ok.You must feel better now knowing that Q is ok.
Take advantage of the time off work, put your feet up and relax!

I also had a fall at 34 weeks. My feet just gave way on me... I was a wreck... I honestly just couldn't stop crying.. I was so worried something had happened to my little man...
I went to my GP and got checked over.... My son was perfectly fine... Although after the fall I felt Physically fine ... mentally was a different story... having the doctor check me over was a great peace of mind for me...
If you are worried... DEFINITELY get checked over.... The Uterus is made to withstand alot... and I am sure everything will be fine... but for your sanity's sake go and hear that from a professional

Hi Glad you went to the hosp and everything was fine :yelclap: And that you got a sneak peek of what it is like there and what you need to take, now you can get busy preparing everything for her arrival and your journey to the hosp. Best of luck for the rest of your pg.

Glad to hear everything is OK with you and Q!!
Sounds like they took very good care of you which is great - and a comfort for the upcoming delivery.
And good on you for overcoming the "in laws" situation - tough one , no doubt.
Hope they were good to you.

thanks again everyone for your concern :)
i had another checkup yesterday & all was good! :D
on the way home from the hospital i stopped at a shopping plaza & was looking at baby stuff & stuff to take into the hospital for my stay when Q.'s born. anyway, i saw a baby heartbeat monitor for $40 at kmart, so i bought it thinking if i have another scare, i'll try that first ;) i tried it as soon as i got home & it works! (i wasn't sure if it would considering how cheap it was!!) :D
