Hi,

We may relocate to Sydney in 2008 for my DH's work.

It is an ok place to be with a young fam? Two DSs (2 and 10 weeks).

We would live someone not too far from DH office (George St). I don't really know Sydney at all.

Any comments/advice sincerely appreciated.

Cheers and merry christmas.

I cant tell you much as I'm in Brissy, all I do know is apparently rentals are hard to come by, so good luck on finding a place if you do go!

Wishing you the best of luck!
There is a huge shortage in available Sydney rental properties.
Best to do your property shopping as quick as you can.

Would depend where you lived and I think probably one of the most expensive cities to live in (rentwise) I find the traffic a pain to get anywhere

Ok you probably DON'T want to live right in the city, near hubby's work.

Way too expensive and not good place for kids!

Most city workers commute by either train or bus so keep that in mind when looking for somewhere to rent/buy. You'll want it within walking distance of the train station or bus route.

Outer west is cheapest usually but can take a while for the commute. Lots of families out there though.

Inner west can be good but it depends on the suburb.

South and North are OK too if you've got plenty of moolah.

Investigate a bit more and put your choices up here again when you know a bit about where you think you'd like to live. Someone will have an opinion on the suburb!

I live on the north side and I love it.
Rent can be pricey but if you move a little out from the city it does drop.

I think Sydney is a beautiful city to raise kids in..But i am a wee bit biased.

I live in the inner west which isn't too far from George st....30minute bus ride and I think it's a fairly nice place to have a young family. There's lots of parks and playgroups to go to and a lot of the shopping centers are starting to have indoor play equipment which excellent for rainy days.

Rent will be pretty high in this area though.

Good luck with the move if it happens

We live in the Eastern suburbs and also love it.
I think Sydney is a brilliant place to bring up a family and frankly I wouldnt want to live anywhere else (except maybe New York..)

Good luck with the move.

ps: we have never had any problems getting rentals. just think positive (that's what i do when house hunting!)

Live on a train line. It's the easiest way to get to work.

The humidity has been crushing and yet the actual temps have been quite reasonable 26, 27 etc.
My parents are in Adelaide and they've been having early 40's.
I think that puts my humidity complaints in perspective!
Now it's bucketing down with rain. Some days it's like living in Thailand in this city!!

Still, wouldnt swap it for all the tea in china. I often toy with the idea of a Melbourne move but I dont think I could handle the cold in winter (been too spoilt by Sydney winters I think :D)

:iagree: you'd be mad to drive to work. I dont know anyone who does. Or else live within walking distance to the city. When I worked in the city I was always lucky enough to live in one of the inner city suburbs which meant a 10 to 15 minute walk.

Some areas you might want to think about if you want to walk to work (or hubby to walk to work... also means you can walk in to meet him for lunch with the kids in the pram, I used to do this with DD1 all the time) are Surry Hills, East Redfern,East Sydney, Darlinghurst, Rushcutters Bay, Paddington, Potts Point. But anywhere on a train line means you can get to work in half an hour (with express trains taking you quickly from the outer suburbs to the city).

You will need to work out your budget and then find areas that match your budget.

Parking in the city is extremely expensive. You won't want to drive especially as it is getting more and more expensive with added tolls etc.

If you have a rough estimate want you want to spend on rent/purchase, if you want a house/unit and if you want to be near the beach then we might be able to give you more idea of areas so you can pop onto the web and start researching accommodation.

$$$ will probably play a big part in your choice of suburb, unless you can get DH to negotiate rent as part of the relocation! :D
