Hi,

DS is 2 and a little while ago the pharmacist suggested I try this Dimetapp cough medicine with him. DS has a tendency to get a bit croupy and then develops a cough that lingers.

I've tried it a few times and while it definitely seems to work and he sleeps much better at night with it, every time I give it to him he seems quite hyperactive the next day and refuses or mucks around with his day sleep (like now).

Does anyone think this could be a reaction to something in the medicine or is it just a coincidence?

I think with some kids it makes them drowsy and others it hypes them up. Id definately hyped my son I would see a reaction in about 20 minutes.

Tried it once with dd, never again she went:devil:

I've been told that cough medicine is generally seen as a bit of a no, no these days for kids

I agree with the above posts - don't use it.

I spoke with my GP re giving my daughter who is now 5 1/2 months demazin for a blockedup nose for 3 months since birth and he said no to it. I also spoke with the paediatrician and she said no also. She also said it makes their breathing labile even though it helps and I were to only use nasal drops.

Shel

well - I don't think I'll ask that pharmacist's advice again!

He did eventually have a sleep today but he has continued to be  this afternoon. I hope he wakes up his usual self tomorrow!

My GP still recommends it...granted my kids are a little older than yours though, so maybe that's the difference.

Are you using the colour-free one? If not, maybe it's the colour that they are reacting to? I only use the colour free one and have never had any hyper problems.
