View Full Version : Waiting lists since birth?

I'm not too sure how to vote on this one. I never put my dd on a waiting list since my intention was to remain a SAHM until she started school, then work school hours. It just so happened that I got a job in a childcare centre and they had vacancies for my daughter as well. Then they were taken over by a large company that will remain anonymous and went severely downhill. Staff were run into the ground and therefore highly strung as a result, and of course kids feel stress that adults feel whether we try to hide it or not. Then a brilliant centre opened up that was actually to counter this large company. Just happened that the centre opened up at the same time as I was looking to change her care arrangements. It was also my intention to work just a few hours a day but as all the parents on here would know, it's not worth just working a few hours when you have daycare fees to pay. You pay for 12 hours even if you only use 3 or 4 hours. What works for us is for me to work the full day 3 days a week and not work at all on the other days. I would still very much prefer to be a SAHM though :crying:
Need a "Other" option for this one. I enrolled my son in the local daycare centre when he was 6 months old to start one day a week for a couple months and then start full time when he was 11 months. The daycare he goes to is highly sought after but by asking for one day a week he was given a spot at the centre and then because he was already going to the centre he was given priority when it came to going full time. I was stressing because I'd heard stories about having to enroll your child before they were even born. Thankfully not the case for us!

While I was studying I was the group leader in a nursery room. I had a waiting list the size of a phone book and more than once I had women 6 weeks pregnant coming in for a tour and to join the queue.
i put my 11 month old on a waiting list last week for 2010 when he truns 3.
with DS #!, i walked into the centre i wanted and asked if they had any vacancies, they did so i put him in there. when i changed centres, i did the same and got the same result. he was 3 at the time and i hear that care is harder to find for babies.

I voted other, there was no waiting list for us. DS got in straight away. We had a pick of many centres around here, some did have limited days though.

Totally unrelated, ive worked in childcare for 6yrs, at 3 different centres (1 had 2 centres and worked between the 2 for a while) In 2 different towns of differing size.
My first (1 organisation, 2 centres) - Small centres, Waiting lists most of the time for all ages at both - varied lengths, and some babies were on Before parents were showing while pregnant. Depending on what days people wanted.
2nd - Larger town, more options. Waiting list most of the time for SOME days, other days were fine.
Personally, Ill be enquiring towards the end of my pregnancy about waiting lists but dont want bubs going till its at least crawling........personal reasons.
