I have just had a shower and noticed a red mark size of 50c piece to the right of my nipple, the left breast has been sore ( like an ache) because I have stopped feeding off it ( I haven't fed off this side for 2 days) because of a cracked nipple. It is not full it is still soft to touch it is not engorged. The right breas is fine not sore and I have been continuing to feed off it constantly. Can you have mastitis in one boob, I feel fine though and bubs is nearly 4 weeks old.
Any advice would be appreciated.

TIA
Mel

It sounds like it definitely could be the early stages of mastitis or a blocked duct:(That's how mine came up, just a red mark then the next day I had flu-like symptoms and my boob OUCH:( I hope it's not though:hugs:

It could be mastitis- as a read mark is one indication of it... I don't know all that much about it all as I've never had it...

I wouldn't stop feeding on that side though- as your milk supply will go funny- well the other side will be able to make enough milk- you may just be a bit lopsided.

Have you tried using lansinhoh on the crack? I found it really useful- I would put it on just before I fed and it seemed to help a bit with the pain..

if you do have mastitis it is important to clear the blockage- through feeding and/or massage. I would call the ABA (it's free to anyone)

if you start feeling sick at all (fluey) definately get to the doctor asap as you can get quite sick with it-

hope someone comes along soon to help with more useful advice

Will I get it in both breasts?? Should I run off to the docs?? I feel OK.

I would probably go to the doctor now before it gets bad. It does sound like mastitis especially if it's sore and lumpy.

Try, if you possibly can, to feed out of the sore boob because it will only get more blocked if you can't.

Thanks I will do that. I think I have thrush on that nipple and haven't used anything will the thrush hurt the bubs??

Hmm gee I'm not too sure about that one :(

If no one else on here can help with that question I would probably give the ABA a call if I were you they will be able to help you with all of these questions.

Good luck :)

Thrush won't hurt bubs but you should get some Nilstat drops. I put them on my nipple as well as in DD's mouth. It does definitely sound like the early stages of mastitis too, go to the docs before it gets to the toe curling pain stage. Ouch.
