View Full Version : Bronchiolitis
Last week my little 3 month old was in hospital for 4 days with broncholitits, aparently a strange time of the year to catch it she was being fed through a naso tube and given o2 to help her breathe. Anyway its been nearly 2 weeks and shes still not right not eating properaly and still very chesty ive been back to the hospital for them to say i just have to be patient as chloe is just one of those who takes a long time to recover. Its just so upseting, i want her to her to start feeeding properally again. Im having to sryinge feed her if she dosnt want the breast or bottle . Im back to drs again today for them to check out her chest to see if its clearing and to discuss her eating habits.
Anyone else has to deal with this nasty virus!:(

I can empathise with you. My daughter caught RSV when she was 11 months old which led to bronchiolitis. It was awfull watching her strugle so much. She was an ex 28 weeker so had an underlying respiratory problem, needed lots of suctioning, NGs O2 ect... It did take a long time for her to recover fully. I'm sorry if it is TMI but she had so much nasal mucous with the infection she couldn't breath and feed at the same time.
Trust your instincts, if Chole does not feel right to you keep knocking on the Drs doors. I wish I could be of more help. I hope that she is better soon
Take care
Hi,
My DS2 caught RSV at 6 weeks and was admitted to hospital for 4 days, he had oxygen for the 1st few days and then our paed wanted us to stay at least 24 hours after coming off oxygen. He had difficulty feeding, suctioning the mucous really helped in hospital and when I got home I used saline solution. Luckily he fed fairly well during this time and didn't lose weight.
The cough and generally looking chesty and that sucking in under the ribs when they breath lasted a while after even though his oxygen stats etc were ok.
If I was you go back to the hospital or Dr and get her hydration level and oxygen stats checked to give you peace of mind. Because they do go downhill quickly, one minute I was at the GP who said stay home and try and feed often the next we were rushing to hospital because his breathing had deteriorated. I'm sure your daughter is past that point though, as the peak of it is meant to be day 4. Trust your instincts and good luck. It is scary when they are so little and sick :hugs: Sorry this turned into a bit of a ramble :o
hey ..
I think that it is odd that they said it was an odd time of year to catch it? My DS had the start of it at 3 months (one month ago) - and he avoided hospital (luckily) - this week he has started to sniffle and cough ... like it started last time.. (sigh) I dont know WHY he is always kept warm and well fed/?
when we went to the Drs a month ago - there were LOTS of little kids inthe waiting room - all coughing the same cough - I think there is lots going around...
:hugs: to you and your bubs... I hope she is much better soon ..

Hi,
I know what you are going through. My five year old daughter had bronchiolitis when she was a week old. She spent 16 days in hospital because she ended up with pneumonia and a partly collapse lung. I can tell you it was scary. I think she was born with it. Actually her body was shutting down and we were on the verge off going for a ride in a helicopter to Westmead children's when she started turning the corner. I never want to go through that again. I was a mess. I think she caught it off me as I had been sick with the flu, for the last 3 months of my pregnancy. I was so exhausted afterwards, I ended up in hospital with an infection.
Thankfully now I know what to look for, that if Ashleigh started to get sick I would have her straight to the doctors or hospital to get her checked out. They say that if your baby had broncolitis there is a good chance that bubs could develop Asthma later on, thankfully Melissa is showing no signs and she is five.

Oh man, I know what u mean.
DS1 was hospitalised with it at 5 months(December) and at 10 months(May).
DS2 was hospitalised with it at 10 days old(Feb) and was in hospital for 2 weeks. Ugh.

Imy had it at just on 5weeks- we spent awhile in the HD unit in the pead ward! She took awhile to get over it to and she lost 450gms in the time we were there!!! Good thing she wasn't born a lightweight lol.
She kept the cough for about a fortnight and it took about that long for her to feed properly to...
I hope bubs is feeling better soon, and I agree with all the ladies here- if it doesn't feel right to you keep "nagging" until someone helps you!!

Yep! My now 7 week old son had it at 5.5 weeks. Fortunately it was mild but it had the GP concerned. He had sent a 3 month old to hospital with it a week earlier. My son caught it from his sister who had a cold. I had to keep up the breastfeeding as it was the only way we could treat it and I was fortunate that DS was still feeding okay. He was too young for over the counter medication. If it was any worse it would have been antibiotics. I saw the Padeiatricain at for DS's 6 week checkup and he said it was getting better, but my poor little man still has a little cough going.
Apparently a lot of babies are catching because of air conditioning too. Air Con is contributing to many people getting winter illnessnes in summer.
