Hi there everyone,
I would like to share this experience...
Early this week we were finishing up with the xmas decorating around the office. We bought a bag of assorted balloons (may be from red dot or one of the discount stores) and 2 of my workmates blew them up. I helped out by tying the knot. After we've finished with the balloons, I had to wash my hands straight away as the smell of rubber was in my fingers. I think I had to wash about more than 4-5 times because the smell was coming off. I even used dish detergent at one point but the smell didn't come off.
When I was telling my workmate about the smell, she quickly told me not to rub my eyes or touch my face because she started to feel a a stingy sensation around her lips (most likely because she blew quite a few balloons). Somewhat like when you accidently touch above your lips or eyelids after handling chilli.
Then the other workmate who also did the blowing heard us and told us that she felt the same sensation and she had to wash her face.
Both of them felt stingy even after several washes. But after about an hour, it subsided. STill stingy but not as bad. The next day they both said that they could still feel the sting when they got home. One of them said that she rubbed some tea tree oil on her face and it helps.
I didn't get rid of the rubbery smell until after my morning shower. I don't know how many times i had to wash my hands to get rid of it! I was scared that whatever was on the balloons may make my baby feel stingy as well when I pick her up.
So, just be careful. I'll have a look if we have some left so I can see what brand it was.
