can anyone tell me why the HPV vaccination is being marketed as a 'cervical cancer vaccine'? it seems to be blatantly misleading.....:detective:

why are they allowed to mislead women like this?

conversation with a doctor the other day (not my usual GP):

doctor: you havent had the cervical cancer vaccine yet. i can do it for you now if you like?
me: its not a cervical cancer vaccine, its a HPV vaccine. there's a difference, and no i dont want it.
doctor: HPV causes cervical cancer, so in essence, it is a cervical cancer vaccine.
me: i dont care how you try to market it, i dont want it.

surely they cant do this? its NOT a cervical cancer vaccine (is it?!)

The 4 strains of HPV it protects against, account for 70% of all cervical cancers. So you could have the vaccine, it could be 100% effective, and you can still get cervical cancer. And you could still get HPV.

The problem I have with the marketing tactics is that they aren't pushing the "you still need regular pap smears" point hard enough IMO. I know people who have said "now i won't need to have yukky pap smears"  (don't worry, i set 'em straight :D)

My sister had it the other day  Even though she's married, so obviously not a virgin. I asked her "why did you have it?" she said "coz the doctor told me to" and laughed. I just gave her The Look

well...i don't know. i never thought about it. maybe , on the street, everyone understands 'cervical cancer' more than they do HPV, and it saves someone the hassle of having to educate the public on a more comprehensive way.

or maybe its the first phase of a greater educational plan. like when AIDS first came out. everyone understood AIDS but not necessarily that HIV caused it and would eventually lead to AIDS. that might have confused everyone at first or maybe the medical faculty weren't clued on at first. now everyone knows about the role HIV plays in AIDS becasue we're so much better educated and that the vaccine would probably be a HIV vaccine, not an AIDS one.

am i making any sense here??

I think they originally wanted to call it the HPV vaccine but a lot of parents were proclaiming that they would not vaccinate their daughters because HPV is sexually transmitted. A lot of religious / "moral" parents would say that their daughters would not be having sex unless they were married (which by the way about 8 in 10 people have HPV so it's not unlikely that you could catch it off your husband on your wedding night).

I talked someone out of getting it the other day. I didn't really mean to, I just explained what it actually was and she decided she wasn't going to bother.
