View Full Version : Should I be bigger?

hello everyone,
I may be panicking for no reason but you may be able to ease my mind. I'll be 12 weeks on Friday, had a visit to GP today when she felt my tummy but said she couldn't feel the baby/uterus. I thought at this stage the doctor should be able to feel something ...
Also I don't really have a bump at all - apart from the usual over-eater's tum that I get after a meal! - and I did think I should be starting to get a bit bigger now. I am having the nuchal fold test on Monday so I guess I should just wait til then to find out if everything's ok. But is anyone else out there at a similar stage to me? I know every pregnancy is different, but I think I just need some reassurance.
For a number of reasons, I need to tell my boss today or tomorrow, but now that I'm panicking abt the baby, I wonder if I should wait. But she goes on hols on Friday so may miss my chance ...
I would love to hear from others about what's going on. This is my first and I've not told anyone, so am scratching around in the dark trying to figure out what's going on.

Hi there,
I am not a June Mother, but thought I would pop in to say that as you said, all pregnancies are different. Its not uncommon in a first pregnancy not to show at all right up until 20 weeks or more.
As for your GP, I am not sure. A midwife would be able to feel your uterus by now, maybe your GP is just not very experienced with pregnancy? Or you could have an inverted/tilted (whatever its called) uterus?
I am sure everything will be fine :)

Relax.
Every pregnancy is different, and people start to show at different stages. Some get bloating and a 'bump' from 6 weeks, others dont actually get a bump or much bigger till very very late in the pregnancy.
Youa re actually not required to tell your work until 10 weeks prior to going on maternity leave - though most people do tell after the first trimester has passed. If your boss is going on leave, I would tell her.
Good luck for your scan tomorrow - and for the rest of your pregnancy.

rhiannon, i wouldnt worry too much about it. Esp if its your first bub.
If your doctor was really worried about it he/she would have sent you for further tests. Did they try to listen to the heartbeat at all? If you are really concerned, book in another appointment and ask for more information - you have a right to feel comfortable and in the loop, after all it is YOUR pregnancy.
As for telling your boss. I would just mention it too her quietly. Tell her that you are pregnant, and when you are expecting, but let her know that you arent quite over the 'all important' 12 weeks. but if you dont feel entirely comfortable doing that, i think that by law you arent obligated to tell your boss until you are 4 or 5 months (??)

Hi Rhiannon.
I too am 12 weeks on Friday, I have a little bump, I can notice it. But as people have been saying every one is different. Try not to worry about it :D I'm sure everything will be ok.

try not to worry, with my 1st pregnancy i didn't start showing until around 6 months, then it just didn't stop getting bigger.
everyone is different and every pregnancy is different, you just take it as it comes..

Thanks everyone,
I'm heading to the OB tomorrow and I really hope she can feel it. Then it's the nuchal fold test on Monday so I will also have a better idea then.
Told my boss and she was so supportive and excited for me, which is great. She is already talking about us finding ways to change the work load so that I could return part-time after my maternity leave is over. At least that's one thing I don't have to worry about anymore!

The doc felt mine at around 13wks & he said I prob won't feel much, but he said he could feel it a little, so don't worry pet Im sure all is hunky dory.. the uterus is still very small at 12wks, im nearly 16wks! oh & with DS i didnt start showing till i was 20wks or so... now its quicker.
have you had a scan yet for dating?
if the scan on monday is your first one it could be that you might be a little behind in dates even if you know when your LMP was
with all my pregnancies, even though I know when my LMP was I was always measuring a week or two behind for some reason, as in baby measuring a week or two behind, not my tum, if that makes sence
i'm sure you've got nothing to worry about, and as you said your not quite 12wks yet, so that is most probably why the doc couldn't feel it
good luck on monday

Hi all,
Quick update - went to OB on Friday, everything ok, had my first scan and saw the baby moving around, sucking its thumb etc. I was absolutely gobsmacked!
So I guess the morale of the story is - try to worry less about things you can't control, make good decisions wherever possible and that's the best you can do for your baby. It's hard, esp for first-timers, but we have to learn to let this pregnancy thing take its own course.
Good luck everyone and have a lovely Chrissy. Speak soon! xxx

Hey darl,
thought i'd just pop into this section, i'm not due in June, im from the April 08 section but thought i'd give you a little more reassurance. It's great that bubs is fine and healthy by the scan! I'm heading for 24 weeks pregnant and i have only just started growing a tummy in the last month or so! And it's tiny! it just looks like a fat tummy not a pregnant tummy, my belly button hasnt popped out yet or anything. This is my first baby also, maybe we just have good tummy muscles :D so that's what i like to think anyway lol!
Dont stress! relax, trust me enjoy not having one while u can cause it gets mighty uncomfortable as it starts growing! And goodluck with the rest of your pregnancy, hope it goes nice and smooth for ya!!
