My DS is 4 months old and I'm thinking of taking him to the local sports complex where they have a kiddies pool. I've seen products like Huggies swim pants and was totally shocked as I just assumed he wore nothing (other than his swimmers). So what should I put on him to go swimming in a public pool?

for the sake of others in the pool, then yes swimming nappies are a must.... that is unless you like the thought of your little one swimming in other kid's bodily fluids!!

Given that a 4 month old has no way of controlling when they do a poo, or any way of telling you that they're about to, I think it would be pretty gross if they did that in the pool, and that swim nappies would be appreciated by the other swimmers.

yup you need disposable swim nappies. I bought some swimmers from the cancer council that are reusable nappy ish type things . (Very clear description:laughing:). Theyre made specifically for babies who arent potty trained

You don't need "disposable" swim nappies. You can just use a pocket MCN, with no stuffing.

You can also get aqua nappies from places like big w for like, 5 bucks I think... Much better then having to buy the huggies ones. If you do buy the huggies ones however, and they aren't soiled, you can just chuck them in the wash, dry, and use again. Saves the pocket a bit.

just thought id add here i know when my DS needs to poo. Have you heard about Elimination Communication?
My local pool says as long as there is something on the baby to contain poo, thats all that matters, as the chlorine takes care of the wee.

All public pools I go to wont let you put under 2's in the pool without one (they sell them there pretty cheap) and over 2's I'm always asked if my kids are TT

I know that if students poo during a lesson the rules are that the WHOLE pool has to be shut down for 24 hours. ... to ensure that all the germs are elliminated by the chemicals - so you can imagine the loss of money that pool would have to accept ...

unless toilet trained ALL Children should be wearing a nappy in the pool (cloth or sposie) and ... the other thing to remember - is if it is a heated pool.. kids are MORE likely to poo  cause the lovely warm water relaxes everything!!

I've just bought swimmers for my friend's 4 kids, including the baby. I bought him the Mio Bambino swim nappy and it's so cute, it's blue with little underwater designs on them! They weren't around when my dd was in the pool as a baby, I went with the huggies ones although reluctantly. There was another girl, dd's godmother's siser, her baby was about 9 months old and she just put the little togs on her baby, I was absolutely horrified! I told her it's disgusting, what if she pees or poops, but she was adamant she knew when her daughter would pee or poop and that she wouldn't do it in the pool. I'm not so sure about that, it freaked me out... You can also get nappy pants with the sunshirt from places like Target, they are really cute too. Have fun in the water!

My son (8 months now, 7 months for first swim) just wears little speedo style bathers from BigW.
He doesn't poo in the water, but let me tell you... if he did, nothing would contain it! LOL He does huge squirter poos that need a snug cloth nappy (dry) to stop them.

Yes, I've heard of elimination communication. I should perhaps have said that "in general, you can't know when your 4 month old is going to do a poo" because, in general, there aren't a lot of parents who do elimination communication.

Swim nappies are only to contain poo.
None contain wee, they don't absorb. If they did, they would just absorb the pool water straight away anyhow.
All the wee from all the bubs in the pool just floats around

my ds wears those swim pants, look like speedos with a lining from KMart. He has done a poo before and it containes it. I find it cheaper than buying the huggies swim nappy, although when i did i used to rince it out and re-use it if not soiled.

I used to use a MCN but because with little girls one piece's the nappy went on the outside of her swimmers. She looked funny but cute!

We have a monkey doodle one too... DS looks so adorable with this little blowfish on his bum :bee: But back to the point. Most places sell reusable swim nappies these days. Even speedo makes a swim nappy
I did initially look at the disposable swim nappies but they would end up costing more than a non disposable one. Didnt make sense to keep buying the disposable ones if you swim often enough even if you reused them a couple of times
