Hi,
Anyone tried cow's milk in babies cereal? Robyn Barker of Baby Love says its ok from 6mths? Also says breastfed babies can be given cows milk in a cup from 9 months? PLEASE has anyone else tried this? If a baby has been having yoghurt without any side affects I assume there shouldn't be an intolerance to cows milk?

Hello,

My son had cows milk from 10 months and had no problems however the clinic nurse at the hospital suggested that I give him pentavite as well.

I breatfed up to 10 months. My milk stopped when I fell pregnant and my son refused to take formula and would only take cows milk.

Hope this helps :)

I give alice cow's milk in her cereal as I figure she has custard and yoghurt, so it's no different. My GP however recommended not giving full glasses of milk until 10-12 months.

Cow's milk in cereals is fine - if they have an intolerance you would already know about it as much of the stuff (technical term) they are intolerant to comes through in your breast milk anyway. I have given both my girls small amounts of cows milk in cereal etc from 6.5 months and both have been fine. I weaned my eldest onto cows milk at 12 months and she was fine - I started her on occasional small cups of it at about 10 months, as well as cups of water, and we had no dramas. The only thing to be careful of in older children is that if they drink too much cow's milk it can attack their iron supplies - but that is only when they are older and when they are drinking excessive amounts ( e.g. more than a litre a day).

I tried giving my son a teaspoon of yogurt at about 6 months before giving him cows milk. I had no idea that he was allergic to cows milk (I breastfed him until 14 months with no reaction) until then. His face swelled up and he vomited, but luckily after about 1 hour this reaction went down (his breathing stayed fine during this time, and I had called the hospital to make sure). So I avoided dairy, and tried soy, which took him about 4 months to get used to. We got him tested for other allergies at about 14 months, and sure enough, peanuts, dairy and eggs all came up. He is still allergic, and has asthma to go with it, but we are coping all fine, and he's strong and healthy.
Hope this helps,
