It's been 3 months since I stopped expressing for DS (didn't bf successfully, just gave him as much EBM as I could). Every so often I check to see if I can still express anything when I'm in the shower and I still can. How long does this usually go on for?

TIA :)

it can take anywhere up to a year, some people even after a year of stopping can still express a little, you can get tablets to stop it completely, but most doc's wont' prescribe it, also there is a herbal tablet you can take which is called milk stop, I havn't seen it here in australia though, but then again I havn't really looked at it, so maybe talk to someone in your local health shop

i still had milk after having ds for about 12 months, natually if you are continuing to stimulate your breasts you are going to keep getting mlik :)It really can vary though

Thank you responders. :)

It's no big deal for me so I wouldn't take any medication. It's not like I still have to wear breastpads or anything - I was just curious :detective:

I check probably once a week - it's getting harder to squeeze anything out so I think they will dry up soon.

Mine dried up in terms of feeling full pretty fast but it has been two months now and I can still squeeze a bit out just incase, think of it as your emergency back up supply!

I'm going back to work in 2 months :crying: and I'm on medium term medication so I can't give bubs any ebm even if I did start to express again.

i couldnt breastfeed, i only tried for a few days in the hospital and it just wasnt working.

so when i went home it was soo hard cos i was full of milk and he wouldnt take it. and very painful waiting for it to go away.

anyway it still took over 12 months for it to go away!! even sometimes id feel a drip in my bra!!

i was like what is going on lol....

but yes i used to do the same thing in the shower to see if it still there.. but then stopped. lol...

My situation was definitely different, but DS got sick when he was 5 days old (milk came in on day 4) and I had to express feed for the next two weeks. I found that I just didn't produce enough and ended up putting him onto formula following doctor's advice. My milk dried up within about two weeks after I put DS onto formula.

IS it possible to always have a lil milk after breastfeeding?

Av self weaned at 21 months. He is now 25 months and there is still a little. Not a lot though - I don't leak.

I have heard of women having small amounts of milk up to 2 years after, and my step mother, who looked after her grandchildren a lot when they were little, always found she would leak small amounts when they were babies, she must have been a super lactator!! Just the sight and sound of a baby set her off :)

My SIL's son is 5, he stopped BFing at 1 and she said she still had some milk up until about a year ago.

So there you go...BFing til 4/5 is normal if she is still producing milk even after her boy weaned years ago. :)
