You know the little balls you can put into your nappy bucket to minimise odours and then you can chuck it in the wash with your nappies. They have some essential oils but I've heard oils can ruin the absorbency of the nappies . I received one to try with a recent order and I wanted to know if it was okay before I do.

Are they like pail pals? What are they made of?

the ingredients are Baking Soda, Natural Soaps, Citric Acid, Essential Oil. They deodorise your bucket and acts as an in wash booster for your nappies. I'm just a bit concerned about the essential oil ruining my nappies. I guess MCN stores like naturescradle etc wouldn't sell them if they were bad for nappies right? I'm also concerned about the natural soaps (what does that mean exactly anyway ) as DD has sensitive skin. Maybe I shouldn't risk it.

Essential oils won't effect the absorbency, but they are thought to have an effect on PUL and elastic. Plus there's the uncertainty of some babies skin being sensitive to some oils.

My biggest concern would be the Baking Soda (Bicarb). This is known to have more of an effect on PUL and elastic, and is best used only occasionally (ie strip washes).

And as for the natural soaps, I'm assuming this would have the same result as using "normal" soap - coating the nappies resulting in less absorbency.

These balls would be fine to use for terry flats, where there is no pul or elastic.

eta: thought I should add that these would be fine used in the bucket, but I just wouldn't make it a habit of putting them in the wash. A cheaper alternative would be to sprinkle bicarb and some essential oil in the bottom of the bucket, cover with some baking paper (to stop the bicarb going on the nappies).

Oh **** I've been using baking soda with my nappy washes every second week . No more baking powder and I won't be putting the nappy buddy in the wash.

Thankyou

That's ok. Bicarb, like vinegar, is fine for terry flats, just not as a regular for MCN. :)

I make my own pail pals with water, bicarb and essential oil. I only use them in the pail, as gremily said, the bicarb is bad for PUL

There is a recipe for the pail pals at the top of the clothie section, I'd suggest just making them up for the bucket, it will be heaps cheaper and easier!
