Hi - I'm having to think about the CVS and amnio tests right now and was wondering how other people approached it. Did you have these tests, why/why not, what were they like, and is it really something to dread or fear?

I'm 38 and have been reading way to much on the risks of abnormalities at my age ...

Hi
It's a tough one, well I found it hard to make a decision but once I made it, I was fine with it.

I had a baby 15 mths ago at age 38 (coming up to 39) and then another baby girl just 13 days ago at age 40 and I didn't have an amnio or cvs with either. I did have the nuchal scan and was happy with those results and my OB said why have one (an amnio or CVS) if you don't need or want one so that was my decision made.

It was the invasivness of those tests and the risks that go with them that scared me off.

Good luck and best wishes.

Ps - I have two healthy little girls :)

Hi there, I had an amnio with DD...

After my Nuchal & bloods, I came back as a high risk of having a baby with DS (1:98)... something I didn't expect at 22. It was just my bloods which gave this indication though....

We decided to have the amnio, it was a tough decision to make due to the small risk of mc, but for us the risk was greater not to have it done....

I guess you have to ask yourself would it change anything if you did know... for us it would of that's why we went ahead with it.

I had no probs with the amnio itself, yes it was incomfortable, but it's more the mental side, thinking about it. It was a very stressful time waiting for the results, we opted for a FISH result so we didn't have to wait to long.

Good luck with what ever you decide, wishing you all the best :fingerscrossed:

ETA- our results came back all clear & our beautiful DD was born healthy.

thanks for that - I had the nuchal fold scan yesterday and have to wait for the results of the blood test.

I suppose all you can do is what the doctor recommends and what you feel comfortable with. The test doesn't sound like fun - I've decided that I woulds prefer an amnio than a CVS due to the reduced risks. I'm not sure if the tests diagnose different things though.

I haven't yet heard of anyone who has the tests and received bad results or had a m/c. I suppose the risk is very small.
