I have been sick all day with really bad diarrhea (sorry tmi). Even water seems to go straight through me. DH went to the chemist for me to get something that I could take whilst breastfeeding, but the Pharmacist told him I was to go to the Dr and NOT to breastfeed my baby as she might get it!!!! I am about to go to the Dr, but DD (6 months old) is due to be fed. I have defrosted some EBM for DH to give her, but have you heard of not feeding your baby if you are sick??? If I don't, my milk will dry up and I am NOT putting her on formula!! I am wondering how much milk I would actually have seeing as I am probably dehydrated.
Any help would be muchly appreciated!

Either your DH heard wrong, or the pharmacist is WOEFULLY misinformed.
Feed your baby, just make sure you're VERY vigilent about washing your hands before touching her. If its a virus - then your baby will be getting vital antibodies through your milk, that will make it so much less severe for her IF she gets it at all - and if its food poisoning - then it won't harm your baby anyway.
Just please be careful to wash your hands before touching her - this is the best way to avoid transmission of gastro or the like. Make sure you keep your fluids up, little sips often is best, and don't stress to badly about food ATM. Also, if you think that you're getting dehydrated - head into the hospital. Maxalon is an anti-nauseant that you can safely take whilst breastfeeding, and they're likely to give you some fluids too.
HTH :) and feel better soon

I am not sure how it works but when i had gastro (not sure if thats what you have) when dd2 was only 2 weeks old all i was doing was chucking and sh@tting for like 12 hours....my doctor told me it was ok to BF and my bubs would be unlikely to get it. I am not sure if this is the case but dd didnt get sick at all.
Try and keep your fluids up, even if you end up throwing it up again you will hold some of it still. Hopefully someone else can help but i know i was so worried and my gp said all would be ok and she would get all the antibodies in my milk so would be unilkely to get it.
I hope it goes away soon fingers crossed its only one of these day bugs have you eaten anything that could have upset your stomach?
I agree .. keep feeding her .. just be really really hygienic .. lots and lots of washing hands ..
oh ..and if worried about fluids .. keep the water up .. but those gastrolyte ice blocks?? you can get them from the chemist - are safe during pregnancy (I got gastro REALLY bad in early pregnancy) so I would assume ok when feeding/?? they are much more effective at keeping your body going - and will help you get better faster ...

I had gastro and still fed bub. I just showered before every fed and then put the antibacterial stuff on my hands.
I did have to skip a few feeds and bub had EBM, not because I didn't want to fed, I just physically couldn't.
You will not dry up with one day of not feeding, so give EBM if you physically can't cope with the feed, but if you do feed just be very careful like everyone else has already said
Bub did not get sick btw

Thank you everyone :hugs: I just got back from the Dr's. Luckily, the Dr told me to keep feeding bubs too (or I would have yelled at him!) It can't be food poisening as DH doesn't have it. DH tried giving DD EBM in the car while he was waiting, and she was not impressed - she wanted b00bies! I am very disappointed with the Pharmacist, no wonder breastfeeding rates are so low when you are misinformed  I should have known better though, but you tend to think that they must know what they are talking about :o
Thanks again, off to breastfeed my baby...after thoroughly washing everything in sight!

I agree....I was sick not long ago and luckily my mum stayed home from work to help me with DD and I stayed in bed while mum looked after DD and only brought her in to be fed. She didnt get sick.
Another time I was sick, no one looked after DD except me and I kept on feeding her and she was fine.
Hope you get better soon....it sucks being sick. :hugs::hugs::hugs:

Thanks everyone :hugs:Yesterday was awful, DH stayed at home again to look after me and DD and just brought DD in to me to be fed. I was so worried that I was running out of milk as I was feeding her much more often, but this morning I am feeling heaps better and woke up with the usual "hard rocks"
