Hi Ladies

I'm currently breastfeeding my 7 and a half month old boy and pregnant with baby number 2.

A gf of mine seems to think I can't breastfeed now that I'm pregnant??? is this true?

would love to hear from mums who have breastfeed through their pregnancies and your experiences with it all?

TIA :)

No, it is not true you cannot bf while pregnant! I am living proof!

It is a very common misconception. I lost my milk about 20 weeks, but my toddler continued to confort nurse, and he was ecstatic when my milk came back in after the baby was born. I have now been tandem nursing for almost 2 years!

It seems to be around 50/50 nursing while pregnant, around half nursing children will wean, and the other half will stick it out for the long haul.

www.kellymom.com has brilliant resourses on everthing to do with bf, I would suggest printing some info out to show your friend, she needs to be bought up to date.

Also, "Adventures in Tandem Nursing" Hillary Flowers (or is the author Bumgarner?, always get that one wrong!) is great, has a section about nursing while pregnant

I continued to breastfeed my DD1 until I was 12 weeks pregnant, at which time DD1 was nearly 20mths and self weaned.
Yes you can breast feed whilst pregnant and also tandem feed both when the new bub arrives.
Its a personal choice as to whether you and your child want to continue breastfeeding.

For me, I wanted my DD1 to self wean and she did. I had six months off bf, and now with DD2 I'm bf again and loving it!!

I am TTC and I have no intention of weaning DS. I am really really hoping he doesn't self wean. It will break my heart.

I was breastfeeding while preg but unfortunately at about the 3 month mark my milk supply diminished- my other baby was about 6 months old.

My advice to you is to read up and research and do as much as you can to increase your supply to ensure success :)

I am still breastfeeding my 14month old and am about 26 weeks pregnant. It hasn't been easy (due to sore nipples and breastfeeding aversion) but I do it because it is what my daughter needs (there are still those lovely, snuggly easy feeds sometimes though). My supply dropped around 12ish weeks, but then came back... I just made sure I fed her whenever she wanted. I did need to supplement a little in the beginning (one cup of formula or donated breastmilk some early mornings) as she wasn't having enough wet nappies and was needing something extra, but I really tried to keep that to a bare minimum to prevent weaning.

DD was around 9-10 months old when I fell pregnant. There is also an ABA booklet titled "breastfeeding through pregnancy and beyond" which I found helpful. It costs $5 from their website or you could buy one at an aba meeting. The kellymom site is great also!

I know its early days for me but Im BF my 10 month old DD and 6 weeks pregnant with #2. Not a problem so far. I think I will be tandem feeding both if my body can take holding DD to my breast when I get larger.

You definately can breastfeed whilst pg and after.

I tandem breastfed Ozzy and Isla until he was about 2 1/2 (he still has a feed every few weeks now though). I am still breastfeeding Isla though.

i am still bf my almost 11 mth old and am almost 6 wks preg.. have noticed that he is pulling off crying as if he is not getting enough. Maybe milk starting to dry up a little bit?

Perhaps but at around 11 months old alot of babies are like that anyway regardless of if the mother is pg or not:yes:

True OM. It could also be the hormones changing the taste of your milk... just keep persisting :) :hugs:

Thanks :) It's in response to people saying that extended breastfeeding isn't natural/normal. Maybe I should specify that and remove the old line under my username!
