hi. Firstly you need to decide if you are going public or private (will depend if you have private health insurance already). If going private, you need to book an obstetrician right away as they get booked out quickly. They'll usually see you around 9-11 weeks or so.

If you want to get an early scan (Nuchal Translucency) for downsyndrome and other probs, you need to do that between 11 and 13 weeks.

If you're going public, I'm not so sure on what happens there. You can keep seeing your GP and also have appointments with midwifes at the hospital - dont' know how early you have to book in at the hospital.

Hope that helps some. it's a confusing time!

Im a little rusty but when i had my daughter 7 yrs ago i mainly stuck with GP's until i was 20ish weeks i think it is.

Most women having early scans are due to previous medical history such as previous miscarriages.

But what i highly recomend is shopping around. If you aren't happy with your GP try and see another (if its possible).

Every pregnancy is different. This time i gave up with the GP's and went straight to the public hospital and the midwife was so nice and understanding. I have an appointment for the 20th Dec so i'll find out more then.

I also am reading a book called "Up the duff" by Kaz Cooke. Its lighthearted, honest and will have you giggling at times.

Did your doctor at least give you folic tablets? Though this time around im taking pregnancy multivitamins. Which you can easily talk to your chemist about.

Hope this helps even just a tiny bit. Yell out if theres anything else and i'll try to help.

i have folic acid tablets to take... i had multi vitamins to take as well but the dr told me to stop taking them as it may have been why i have been so sick

The best thing is to call your hospital and ask at the antenatal clinic. They will tell you how it all works as there are usually more than one option available. I will be seeing my gp til 20 weeks then hopefully I will get my own midwife from then til birth.

oh and you need to be careful not to 'overdose' on folate. I take blackmores pregnancy and breastfeeding gold :)

Were you taking the blackmores AND folate? that may be why you were feeling sick as blackmores has the right amount of folate required daily. i am trying to remember to take mine everyday too lol
