Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone out there has experienced or is experiencing thrush from breastfeeding? I think that I currently have it and have spoken to help lines who said that it sounds like thrush and it is not necessarily on the outside of the breast but can be on the inside.

What are the symptoms that you have had and what over the counter remedies have you used to ease the pain until you can get to see a dr?? Also, did you find that your bub had thrush in their mouth and did it cause them to be even more unsettled than usual?

My dd had thrush conistently when little, I was recommended daktrin gel for her orally and I was told to just put it on my aerola anyway just incase. I never actually got it, all of these are over the counter you don't need the doc ask the pharmasist. Thrush in the mouth I have since discovered that it is mildly painful. I wish someone had of told me this when my dd had it.

Hi there,
I had it and my daughter had it in her mouth. My symptoms where that my breasts were extremely itchy. My lac consultant picked it up and i had to give my daughter daktarin oral gel, and I uses daktarin on my nipples about 3-4 times a day. i was putting the gel in my daughters mouth after every feed or about every 4 hours, I had to wipe her tongue and mouth out with a soft wet cloth before putting in the gel, wiping in on her tongue and around the insideds of her cheecks, and with the gel it was just the tiniest amount on my finger.
I would express milk onto my nipples before feeding so that it washed off the daktarin.
Hope this helps some.

Bub and I both had thrush whilst breastfeeding. The Daktarin worked well but you have to be strict about putting it on your nipples and in bubs mouth. Otherwise it gets transferred back and forth.

My nipples were not so itchy but I used to get sharp pains whilst breastfeeding - my GP told me this was a symptom of thrush. Using the Daktarin it cleared up in a week or two.

Hi Taylasmum,

My DD and I had thrush too. I had a terrible time establishing breastfeeding because the pain was so unbearable. I kept getting told that it was attachment problems. I had very bad cracked nipples and was told by the midwives to use Lansinoh ointment on them. It made them feel better but I think that's where our touble started. Putting creams and things on cracked nipples can help thrush along. No one told me this - not even the ABA counsellor or the lady who ran the hospital breastfeeding course.

I had hot shooting pains up my breasts during and after feeds. My DD was very unsettled too and cried a bit, especially in the evenings. It wasn't until I found an article in a parent magazine that it clicked I had thrush. I got our parmacist to check out baby's mouth and he said it was definately thrush. I used the Daktarin gel too. All over her tongue and cheeks and on my nipples after every feed. It took 3weeks to clear up - 2 full weeks and then the extra 7 days just to make sure) I don't know how I lasted that long! Finally, after 8 weeks of hell breastfeeding didn't hurt anymore. I'm glad I perservered AND that I found that magazine article.

I've some friends expecting a baby and wanting to breastfeed. I'll be making sure they know all about thrush and breastfeeding!

Hope you're feeling better soon. :o

Hi,

I too had nipple thrush and my baby oral thrush and wentb through hell - similar situation being told it was an attachment issue. Unfortunately, due to some bad advice and mis-diagnosis the thrush spread through my baby into his stomach. He was screaming for about 2 days and did not do a poo for 12 days and no matter how much I insisted that there was something elso wrong I was told everything from him being a silent reflux baby to not settling him properly!! Finally in desperation chanced upon a brilliant child naturopath who immediately put me on a similar product to Inner Health and an acidopholous product called Life Start (a powder we put a 1/4 teaspoon in in expressed Breast Milk in a bottle for him). Within 3 days we had a very different baby and my breastfeeding career was saved!!!! I was told that Daktarin can suppress the symptoms rather than treat them - but then so many others have had positive results. Maybe if you catch it soon enough???

Good luck! I does get soooooo much better!

Cheers,

I haven't got that but I had a friend whose son got it and I think that she used Daktarin (http://www.drugdelivery.ca/s3419-s-DAKTARIN.aspx). She used the gel one because normally it comes in the form of spray, cream and gel. Try talk about it to your Doctor and you'll get a better diagnosis and he'll prescribe your baby the proper medication...
