View Full Version : Mater mother Brisbane Midwives
I have heard that at the mater mothers brisbane you can have a midwife asigned to you for continuity of care, is that right? what are the guidelines? How do you get into the program? etc any info would be great!
And also i have heard there will be a new hospital, what is the maternity secon going to be like?
I'd like to know the answer to both of these questions too. Are you referring to the mater private or public?
Yep its called the Mater Mothers Midwifery Group, they are a fantastic bunch of midwives!
basically they look after uncomplicated pregnancies/births although they do VBACs etc too... i think you ask to go into the programme at your first antenatal appointmetn at the hospital. but i would ring them and check
I know they did/do tours of the labour rooms etc on Friday afternoons so I'm guessing they will do something similar with the new hospital. If you're having your baby at the mater I would recommend doing the ante-natal class which includes a tour.
Thanks for replying! i will be going public.
QTB you seem to know a little bit about it:) so thanks
I dont think i would be class as having a 'complicated' preg, from privious pregs, just 1 very over sized baby (10lb 14oz!!!!) still he was born naturally, so just as long as nothing arisses during the next preg i should be fine, heres hopeing i get in. is there a catchment area for the mater public?

yep iv had a couple of clients go thru them :) i had a really hard time choosing between the mater mothers midwifery group and the redlands hosp for my bub, cos they are both so fantastic, in the end i just went by closest (which is redlands)
yep big bubs are fine - they dont count that as a complication :)
very big thanks for that, i dont think it is a complication either, he was delivered in three pushes, 9 minutes! but to think if they had of realised/ believed me he would have been born via c-section! that kinda scares me, but now i know i can do it, so on one will be taking that away from me... lol got carried away there, thank-you for your help:)
 yay for 3 pushes! thats sooo awesome considering such a big bub!! my DS was 8pd5oz and 1 push, so im hoping for at least 3 pushes this time!! lol
lol! i gave birth to him squatting so i think that REALLY helped, his head was all over lapped, he looked alittle funny and had some bruising, but i didnt tear, it was so great, we even have onour video camera, my hubby saying (like three hours later) that was easy, and im like well easier:) and he was still so big:) so adorable.
yep squatting definatly would have helped! :D gosh i would have hated to see what happened if you had been on your back (ouch!!) how big was your first bub?
my first one was 8lb 12oz and i delivered her on "all 4's" hated that and had a slight tear. and her head wasn't forsed out of shape!

I just had my bub through the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) it was great to be so well supported through pregnancy, labour, and 6 weeks postnatally- with home visits and all!!
You do need to live in the catchment area for the Mater to be eligible for the MGP-
you can self refer- just call the antenatal clinic and ask to be put through..and do it asap cause there are only limited spaces!!
Good luck!
kadownie thank-you for that information, am really glad to hear you had a great birth experience, good luck with you little bunble of joy:)
