View Full Version : first AF while BF? what is it like?
Hi there
I've just had what i think may be AF, but doesnt seem to have been what i expected. i thought 1st AF was meant to be fairly heavy, but i've just had one day of moderate flow and 2 days of light flow and spotting. It has all stopped again now.
My normal AF is much longer and heavier than what i've just had too, and my post-partum bleeding stopped after 3 weeks.
Does this sound like AF?

I just got my first AF and am still fully BF my 5 month old! It's been like what you describe, light and spotting at first and the last 24 hours it's picked up a little, but not much! Having a bub can change your AFs for the better!:fingerscrossed: I have all the symptoms to go with AF, do you have any? If so then I'd say you prob are having your first AF!

Mine was pretty much the same as it had always been, no problems there.
It does make sense that it would be a bit lighter tho, if b/fing can stop them altogether it could probably make them lighter aswell.

Wow - you are lucky! I always thought that you didnt get AF back until you started weaning - boy was i in for a shock when i started bleeding again!
Havent had usual AF symptoms - i've had a few pimples & felt a little bit cr@ppy but no cramps or bloating and well, the bbs give no indication do they cos theyre huge anyway!!

Mine was all over the place over the 7 months I breastfed. once it came randomly and lasted a month (!!!) sometimes it was just light spotting.... I think anything goes

I was shocked to get AF already too!!! With DD1 I got AF after she had weaned. I wish AF hadn't returned already!

Your body can take a while to adjust...doesnt matter if you are feeding or not - some don't get it back till they wean, some at 6 weeks (like I did!)
I found in general mine were better once I had a baby though.

I had the total opposite!!! My DD, who is almost 15 months, is still BF, I got my AF back just last week after not having them for 3 YEARS!!! I was still BF my son till he was 12 months old, had no AF the whole time he was feeding, then fell pg with DD when he was 13months and I was on the mini pill!! He weaned himself of the breast when I was 2 months pregnant.
They came back full force - I had cramps, I was cranky and quiet emotional and my bleeding was quiet heavy for about 4 days.
Sounds like to me you are starting AF:yes:

My 1st AF returned a few months back and Im still bf my 14month old. The first one was verey light to moderate for a few days then my next AF was an absolute shocker with majorly heavy bleeding (TMI warning) needing me to wear a pad and tampon and change them every 2hrs if not sooner. That AF lasted for just over a week. This time round has been just like a normal AF. I think it can take a few months for some women to have things go back to normal or even improve then before kids.
