View Full Version : How is everyone doing?
Hi
This board has been very quiet lately. How is everyone doing? Does the quietness mean things have picked up or no changes? ;)
DS has been for 2 visits at RPAH Allergy unit. He has an allergy to egg and intolerances to salicylates, amines and glutamates. I was pretty upset on the day but also relieved to have a clear answer. I have no idea egg was the culprit!
He and I (BF mum) have been on a strict diet. He started to improve after 2 weeks and now only has mild, small patches of eczema. I apply cortisone much less frequently.
After 5 months dairy free and 7 weeks on a low chemical, dairy, nut, shellfish free diet- I have decided to wean. I can't continue any longer. I still have some guilt feelings about giving up even though rationally I know I gave it a good go and he will have had 9 months of BM which is pretty good. Just one of those 'mummy guilt' things I guess.
So far he is doing well on Nan 1 HA, but we are only up to replacing the second of 4 breastfeeds. He wasn't too keen on the bottle at first but after experiementing with nipples takes it quite well. He was not happy drinking it from the cup. He has been on a limited diet only eating rice cereal, multigrain cereal, pear, pot, choko, beans, swede, chicken, veal and lamb. I hope to do some challenges of medium level salicylates soon and hopefully some other things. He has been having a banana (amines) and has been ok with this.
How are you all going? Please share. I (and I am sure others) gain a great deal from eveyones experiences.
Hope to hear from you soon

Hi. I didn't even know this thread existed either.
My 5mth old son got diagnosed last week with eczema. For the last week I have had to apply Elidel cream on his skin twice a day. With in a week all his rashes have gone away. It is very expensive cream at $64 for a small tube. He can only have it applied for two weeks. We go back to the doctor next Monday for a check up.
I am not sure what triggers his eczema. I am sure over time I will work out what he reacts to. I have changed all his products for bathing and washing his clothes.
I really hope my little man will grow out of it.
I will keep an eye out for this thread now.

Poor love and poor you! Ruby had a horrific bout of eczema when she was two and had to visit the hospital. It was heart breaking.
DD is 4 next month and is doing pretty well at the moment. She always has a few patches but we have managed to keep it under control.

It kills me when i see her this way everything that usually works doesnt and i cant imagine doing cold wraps like this she would be like a mummy, its hard enough keeping one on let alone her whole body.
RS i am taking her to the beach on the next nice day we have, its an hour away but worth it if it helps ease the weeping as i cant use her cream when her skins broken! Grrrr
I am still struggling to get rid of Emily's eczema. At the moment I am bathing her in Naturals bath wash, applying sigmacort and then a vitamin E ointment on top of it. It has eased a little, but I am tearing my hair out.
She scratches herself so much during the day and I have tried everything. She is good at night. She has eaten nothing different at all.
QV flare up oil made it worse. Dermaveen wash and eczema cream (with the oatmeal) doesn't do anything. Natural treatments are pretty useless. I am having a little success with Sudocream and Bepathem antiseptic cream.
She has eczema on her face, chest and shoulders. So far, it has not spread and it hasn't got any worse.
mandymoo, please keep us updated with the Elidel. I would like to try it, but only if it works.
I wash her clothes in either Amolin or Omo sensitive. Same with mine and DHs clothes. No fabric softner. She is bathed once a day. We are very hot and humid where we are and we can't go without baths.
My sister, who is a nurse, says that dermatologists in her hospital recommend the use of aqueous creams. Does any one have success with these?

During the worst of it, Ruby had it over most of her body. We had to do the cold wraps over her whole body. It sucked, she hated it but it did help. This is what we did: QV bath, pat dry so she was still damp, put cortizon anywhere the skin wasn't broken, covered her in Dermeze. For the arms and legs, the chux clothes dipped in qv water (just used the bath water), with the crepe bandages over the top. For the rest of her, a singlet, undies and socks dipped in the qv bath water.
We haven't had a great deal of success with sea water as sand aggravates Ruby's eczema.

thanks chell i might try it and see what she does the cold wraps work so well but usually i do it when shes sleeping but i can only give it a go and see how much of her i can cover. Salt water works well i find on the weeping patches tends to dry them out and heal them alot quicker but it wont work on her eczema that hasnt hit this stage, makes it far to dry and itchy.
I wanna make some miracle cure!! Sure save a hell of a lot of experimenting and pain

DS is doing really well! His scalp has improved and only has a few patches that really never go away!
Except his skin on his fingers and feet peel, does this happen to anyone else's kids????
Its not just one layer, it's many! It gets so raw, that he is in pain with it, yet doctors keep telling me its nothing to be concerned about!
But his is mainly set off by plants, sand and stuff around the garden, and washing liquid, soap etc. So now his hair is not washed in shampoo I just use the Cetaphil for all over, from top to toe!
I'm lucky I have never had to use cortisone cream or anything strong like that, I can usually manage it!
Oh and he got a flare up a couple of days ago, due to a insect bite of some sort, had to give him anti-histamines, and then his skin was horrible, but under control again now!
Hi to all the new people
Subaruforestermum - never had the peeling thing. I hope someone else can help here.
Punkbaby - :hugs:oh for a miracle - wouldn't it be great  Nothing works uniformly because of the different triggers. I find Hydrazole works well for weeping eczema. Specialist says this is ok to use when skin broken. Just don't use Elidel at this time.
Silvana - I have tried Elidel after chatting with my specialist to dispel the fears (re research showing increased cancer risk in animals). She said used sparingly on small areas only on the face is OK. I have only been using the sample tube and find it ineffective for my DS. See if you can get hold of a sample before spending the money.
Some people have said aqueous creams are drying (can't think where I have read this).
I now use emulysifing ointment mixed with water as my moisturiser. It has helped with DS's dry skin and I find the treatment creams absorb and seem to work better when applied after using it.
DS only improved when we worked out what was triggering it. Consider testing, it really is worth it.
Best wishes to all

She might cope better with it than Ruby did with the warmer weather. I would imagine on a hot day it might feel pretty good. We had to do it in the middle of Melbourne winter :gloomy:
