Hi all,
My DD, who is almost 6, has a strawberry birthmark on her forehead. It came up when she was 3 days old and was bright red and grew quiet rapidly. While it is shrinking in size and fading, I was wondering if anyone elses child may have had one and what age do they normally dissapear?? My peaditrician normally says around the age of 7 it will be completely gone but I would love some feedback on this, it would be much appreciated:thumbsup:

I had one on my chest when i was a baby, a really big one. I cant remember what age it disapeared but i must have been pretty young cause i dont remember having it, there is only a barely visible scar where it once was now. My dd has a tiny one on her ring finger, but its very small.

I had a big one in the middle of my head when I was born. It faded quite quickly and now there is nothing there except a colourless tiny bump.
My DD has one on the top of her head, covered by hair so it isnt really noticable. I was told that it should just shrink with age and eventually disappear.

My DD has one on her arm. It started out when she was about 3 days old and looked the size of a 100's $ 1000's. Now it is about half the size of a 5c peice and got puffy & red. I have noticed over the past month that it has developed a normal skin coloured spot in the middle and has faded quite a lot. I havent been expecting it to change till she was about 6 or 7 so this is a surprise to me.
Can anyone tell me if they stop growing? Do they go away or do they just stop growing as we grow so they look smalled hen we are adults?
Im 25 and still have mine, although its on my upper arm and it has faded alot.
People always ask me what it is, i even had someone ask me once if it was a hiccy:confused:

dd 2 had one and it has pretty much gone almost 5 years later, but it shows when she cries or screams lol.
dd 3 has a funny blue pale spot I think that is from bruising though from being stuck for so long during labour?

There are a few different kinds of birthmarks that are commonly called "strawberries". There is the kind that is red and flat and there is the kind that is red and raised. The latter is called an hamangeoma and start off as a red pin-point from a few days/weeks following birth. They can grow quite rapidly for a while and then stop. Once they start to change to a white colour in the centre this is the start of them breaking down, it can take up to 8 years for them to dissappear and even then they can leave a small red trace on the skin. They are nomally left alone by drs but are sometimes removed if they cause problems with breathing or sight or, if they are on the throat, nose or eyes. It has been found that surgery usually leaves more of a scar than leaving them to go on their own would. My son has one on the top of his head that's about the size of a 10 cent piece and one on his bum that's about as big as a 50 cent piece. The one on his head is fine but the one on his bum is in such an awkward spot and keeps getting horribly infected. He has to continually wear a gauze on it and it's terribly painful for him. If it continues to stay infected he will probably have to have it removed but that's worse case scenario. They are generally completely harmless and will eventauly dissappear almost completely. hope this helps. Try Google, I found HEAPS of info there.
