View Full Version : Does anyone know the difference between rice grain lengths?
Hi:wave: I am trying to eat healthier now I am pregnant, and I bought some brown rice. I got long grain but im wondering what is the difference between long and medium? thanks:thumbsup:
I'm not sure if there is a nutritional difference between long and medium, I think it's just what they are used for that varies. e.g asian dishes etc.
Is one easier to cook or something? I did try medium grain a while back and no matter how long I cooked it it was very chewy
I think the short and medium grains tend to clump together where as the long grain doesn't... so one would be better for steamed rice (short-medium) and the other would be better for fried rice kinda thing.
but dont quote me on any of this coz I could be wrong.. I may have them mixed up lol.

Brown rice doesnt go soft like white rice does.
It will always have a slightly 'chewy' texture due to still having the husk on it.
The only difference between the grain lengths is the cooking purpose as said in the other posts.
If you want to eat a healthier option with rice then try "Basmati"
Its the best for you by far, easy to cook and yummo
I love basmati:) Is it better than brown health wise? I was reading you should eat plenty of brown and grainy breads pastas etc when pregnant
Basmati is the best for you ! Stick with that mate
The absolute best for you is brown - it's all in the fibre - not much fibre in white, but basmati is a good compromise if you don't eat brown at all.
