Go to your music shop and ask them you can usually get a guitar package for around $250 with a dvd and also a book and a few lessons. String wise it depends what sound he likes what he prefers etc comes own to alot of things :)
You can learn guitar on line too step by step as well if he can sit there and has the patience :)

Jackson guitars are great quality! And I'm pretty sure you can get them in acoustic and electric! We have an electric!
When learning guitar as a kid, I had a normal guitar, with 6/8 strings!!! What ever is the standard amount! There are books in the bookshop for around $30 that come with a dvd, as well as a big book!
Or you could always book him into lessons as part of the gift too!!!!
But yeah I agree with Punkbaby, I would head down to the local music shop and tell them what you want, or you think he may want!

What kind of music does he want to play?
If he's interested in rock, then yeah, there are lots of packages available.
I would recommend a steel string acoustic... yamaha are a good brand.
He can upgrade to an electric when he gets more experienced. Better to get a good steel string acoustic than a dodgy electric and amp kit.
Good luck!

definitely. An acoustic guitar is far more versatile. And you are more likely to get something that has a reasonable sound.
I would never buy a cheap electric. I did once for my music room when I was teaching... :( and I learnt my lesson. The pickups (the bit that the sound comes out of to go through the amp) are always the first to go on a dodgy electric. then it sounds BAD

I'd also go for an acoustic guitar. The strings would depend on the type of music he wants to play. Steel strings are better for picking and nylon strings for strumming. Although I personally prefer steel strings cause I love the tinny sound that comes with strumming. Steel strings will harden up the fingers quicker too.
I wouldn't buy anything over $400 to begin with and then move up from there. Martinez are a great brand or Yamaha (but are generally more expensive). The music shop should have sales on ATM so check it out, they may have a package with a case, guitar and CD or learning booklet.
