Just an advanced warning - I write this at the risk of sounding a bit philosophical and a tad ‘group hug’ish.

At fourteen weeks I am officially in my second trimester! I was thinking about this the other day and what it actually meant. All too often I think that we dismiss it as a bench mark, without acknowledging all that we have achieved.

So, I sat down and thought about it all a little differently to usual. On the outside it just seems like I’m gaining a Santa looking bump in time for Christmas, I feel exhausted, have issues with food, and will cry at the most ridiculous things! Doesn’t seem like much to celebrate. But I have actually achieved two amazing things.

Number One. My body has just created a placenta. Essentially, in a matter of weeks, I have just created a new organ. That’s like my partner coming home tonight and saying ‘Oh, I made a new kidney today’
But it’s not just any old organ, this is a super organ. Doing the work of a liver, heart, lungs…. Pretty special stuff.

Number Two. Has everyone realized that by this point the baby is more or less complete. From here on in, it just gets bigger. My body has just made an entire (I hope!) human being! I’m talking ten fingers, ten toes, muscles, skeleton, heart, brain, teeth buds, vocal chords, everything! The best bit about this is I have done it completely unconsciously, but - this is probably the only thing in my life that I will achieve purely without help from anyone else! Yes, my partner gave some raw materials. But no one else can take any credit for actually constructing those perfect little finger nails ;)

So, as we all approach the end of our first trimester, please take the time to reflect on exactly what your body has done - it is a huge achievement and you should all be very proud of yourselves! :yelclap:

Milk_Monkey - Thank you. That's the best thing I've read in ages. I have done lots of reading, as can be expected of a first time mum to be but sometimes it takes someone to sum it up all in one go to make you realise. I read today that in week 10, the little fingers & toes are no longer webbed and my little baby has eyelids and eyebrows and finger nails and everything. I still find it amazing but I think the full scope of it all will hit when I actually get to see the little bugger on the 12th of Dec!
What a wonderful thing that is happening to us all. Best wishes to all of the June mums!
x
And congrats hp-mum-to-be!

Noosa Mum, the 12th is so soon! It becomes so real when you see the ultrasound.

I remember when DS was born, i just looked at him and was just amazed that i had created him inside me. It was really empowering.
It is truely awesome what our bodies are capable of.

i know - it's amazing to think what has been going on in there!

I am in week 11 and praying that I cross the 12 week mark and all is still ok - there is so much happening and it's really unbelievable they are fully formed and only have to get bigger after week 12
