Hey there. We are from NZ and got our baby his passport before we came over last year. Dunno how different it is here but we just went to our local travel agent and picked up a passport application form, filled it out, got photos taken and sent it off to get approved. Best of luck. Hardest thing usually is the photo!!

Yep you need to get her Citizenship by Descent certificate LINK (http://www.dia.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Services-Citizenship-New-Zealand-Citizenship-by-Descent?OpenDocument#seven)
It can take awhile to be processed and costs $200 you havet o apply to NZ to do that one.
Once that arrives in the mail you then need to fill out a NewZealand passport application for her, which you can send to the Sydney office so you wont have to send that one off to NZ. You;ll have to attach the citizen cert with it and any other required documents ( birth certs, marriage certs etc). That costs about $80.
It can be a bit of a pain in the butt, I had to do it for my son a couple of years ago and now am doing it for my second son as we are going to NZ for a Holiday in March.
I wold suggest you get onto it asap so as not to have any last minute stress about getting the passport ( like we did last time, passport arrived two days before we flew )

Ah yes becasue your bubs were born in NZ they are automatically NZ citizens so dont need to apply for a citizen cert, us Kiwis living in Australia who have children born here have to apply for NZ citiznship by descent as our babies despite being born in OZ are neither Australian citizens ot Kiwi citizens, weird when I found my bub was a citizen of NOWHERE!!

No I tell a lie you can do the citizenship via Sydney and it costs $180 AU. thanks for pointing that out I was gonna send it to NZ, just as well would have taken forever like it did last time.
I have filled out the forms and got the passport pics, which you need for both applications but have yet to send it off, I need to do it so it is not last minute, but it is so blooming expensive I havent had the spare $$ to do it with xmas coming up. Must do it!!!:nono:

We did both at once, via the Sydney office and two weeks later we got the certificate and the passport in the mail. Stupid though, it was left at the front door when we weren't home

Thanks I was just ringing them now, so you send both apps to the Sydney office in the same envelope?
God the office is useless,I just got rambling automated NZ lady telling me everything I already know, I miss the good old days of getting to speak to an actual person on the phone.

I got my pics taken at Rabbit photo in Brissy, I assume they all do them?

I would just get the ozzie passport done first, it is heaps cheaper. Hang on, he probably isn't eligible. whoops

The certificate of NZ descent alone costs over $300 and that is not including the NZ passport costs.

With my first son, he has got both, and my second son we got just the aussie one, I am saving up to do his NZ one.

Get the photos done at a proper photo place, have them lay bub on a sheet on the ground.

Kmart/Big W are useless, they take photos which are not acceptable, and you have to get them done again.

Oh wow, I'm glad I came across this thread.....so when my baby is born, she is not an Australian citizen?? Is that because we (both parents) are NZ citizens?

So for her to fly out of Australia (which I am sure we will be taking her to visit NZ at some stage) I need to apply for a NZ passport for her??

Have I got that all right?

Please set me straight if I am wrong

It is not because both parents are NZ citizens, it depends on how long you have been in the country. DH and I were here on the magical day, before the rules changed, i think you have to have been living in the country on 28 Feb 2001 or something silly for your children to be eligible for Aust passports. So Dh and I are both NZ'ers, but any of our children born here have dual citizenship.

So the short answer is unless you were living here on that day, your child WILL need a NZ passport to travel.

Thanks for clearing that up for me ApprenticeMomma

Well once my little girl is born I will look into getting her NZ passport sorted for her first trip to visit the rallies in NZ

I think its from the end of 2001, cause a friend of mine moved over late 2001 and she can have the choice of having her kids either ozzie or NZ'ers

or unless your partner is ozzie then they can be either or, you just have to choose

QUOTE:
Citizenship by birth – From 27 February 2001
A child born in Australia, on or after 27 February 2001, to a New Zealand citizen parent/s is not an Australian citizen by birth, unless the New Zealand citizen parent:

was not affected by the 26 February 2001 changes, or
held an Australian permanent resident visa or Australian citizenship.
Note: Children born to a New Zealand parent who was living in Australia temporarily as a diplomat or as the holder of a special purpose visa (that is guests of government, aircrew or armed forces and their families) are not Australian citizens by birth.

Automatic acquisition of citizenship on 10th birthday.
A child born in Australia on or after 20 August 1986, who did not acquire Australian citizenship at birth, automatically acquires it on their 10th birthday if they have been ordinarily resident in Australia for 10 years from birth. This provision operates regardless of the parent/s immigration or citizenship status.

I just got this info off the immigration site, I wonder how you were able to acquire an Auzzie passport for you child, AnnaC?

I had to prove I was a resident on the above date in question...Hmmm...very wierd.

wow I didn't know that bit, so DD in 10 years time will automatically become a aussie citizen, even after i've made her a kiwi? do you have to pay for it?

well they sent me out all the paperwork, just have to finnish filling it out and send it in with the money, oh and get the photo's taken, so we should be right by the time we fly next year

AM

I would think the citizenship would be automatic and free, but you would of course still have to pay for the passport, if you were to get one :)

I am still waiting on Zekes to arrive, I know they have gone through as the money has come off the credit card, but it's taken a little longer becasue they sent our photos back
Professional photos from rabbit photo too, picky buggers!!! Anyhoo I sent some new ones so :fingerscrossed: they are ok.
When do you guys fly? We are flying out to Palmy on the 7th March.:smiliedance:

Jinglebells
03-02-2008, 00:38
how come they sent your pics back?

I was worried about DD"s pics cause she was kinda smiling in them, so I rang them to say I couldn't get a better pic and they said that it was fine, and that they were leniant(sp) on baby's pics

I fly out in 2wks, so not long before you, when did you send your stuff off?

Lil X-men
03-02-2008, 00:50
Yeah I musta got the @rsehole person the day my application arrived.
They sent them back because they had red eye. Which is understandble, but this was so hard to see it didnt look like red eye at all unless you zoom right in on it, the photo shop people didn't pic it up. Ah well cant be helped.
Seems so pointless though really I mean bubs change everyday at this age, the photo is a waste of time as far as using it as ID:confused:
I sent it all off about a month ago now, probably would have had it all back by now had the pics been accepted.
have fun on your trip!!:smiliedance:
