Has anyone tried any herbs to increase thier breast milk supply? My little boy is 7 weeks old, i have been topping up with formula after most breastfeeds because my milk is low, and he is now getting used to the easy flow of the bottle and losing interest in the breast. I heard the herbs fenugreek and Milk Thistle can help - i bought them but am not sure of the dosage i should be taking - so far they havent worked (has only been 2 days). Any advice would be most appreciated!!!

Hi

When my little boy was three weeks old he lost weight and the health nurse told me to comp after each breastfeed. This made me feel very down as I so wanted to breastfeed successfully. The Paediatrician told me to take Fenlgreen and drink lots of water. I went to the health shop and they told me to take Blessed Thistle tablets. I think these help alot. You take two tablets three times a day with a meal. I went back to the Paediatrician and he put me on Maxolon tablets which are given to pregnant women for morning sickness. I started taking these and I could actually see the milk coming out of Bailey's mouth which I hadnt seen before. The only thing with these tablets is that they can cause muscle aches and after five weeks I started to get this so I stopped taking them.

I thought I would be able to take the comp away but Bailey knows it comes after the breast. My son is five weeks next week and I have just started to wean him off the breast. He also started to realise that he could get the milk easier and faster out of the bottle. For some reason my milk supply wasnt very good and I think I have done well to breastfeed and comp for five months.

Stick with it and I hope this helps you.

Hi there,
My lactaction consultant put me on fenugreek tablets for my supply. I know that I had to take so many the first day and then cut back, but sorry can't remember the dosage. I now take 4 tables per day. i would see either a lac cons or child health nurse or pead before i took any medication, whether it be natural or not.
Hang in there and good luck
