I think this belongs here

MJ is 9.5months old & ever since starting solids, she has been constipated. A CHN told me that dairy can cause it, is that true?

Would you recommend me cutting out all dairy for a few days & see what happens?

All she eats in her 'diet' is veg, fruit, cheese, cereal eg porridge or weetbix, rice, pasta, chicken, tuna etc. Pretty much what i eat. She is still BF also.

Any ideas, tips?

Thanks

I have heard that about dairy too - it doesn't mean that she will necessarily be lactose intolerant but sometimes it takes a while for their gut to get used to it - so yes I would cut out the cheese and yoghurt and see if that makes a difference.

If it doesn't then work through the food groups one at a time. In the meantime ripe kiwifuit is great for helping with constipation (although the black seeds can be a little disconcerting in the nappy!)

Hey RB, wheat blocks up the dude and whizzed up dried apricots unblock him... Just another idea.

Thanks for the apricot hint :)

So Draught, should I cut dairy for a week, or just a few days? Hope she likes water with her weetbix :fingerscrossed:

Not an expert (says the lawyer in me) but I would say give it three or four days and see if there is a change. As for on the weetbix - a bit of EBM? Otherwise I normally mix in some pureed apple so that could cover the lack of milk for you!

I reckon Ali is onto something too - if the dairy makes no difference try wheat next.

Just a heads up, wheat and dairy will do this. I agree, try cutting out the dairy for a week and see what happens, you could give rice milk instead, or EBM. Weetbix is a LOT of wheat for a small body to handle, so I would stick with porridge. (I had this from a naturopath a few weeks ago..)

Well no wheat or dairy has made no difference for now, so i'm going to keep it up for another couple of days. :fingerscrossed: Hope it does help, otherwise its more :detective: for us.

Gotta love the smilies

Thanks for the update - I was thinking of you as I made breakfast a few minutes ago and wondering how it was going!

I know that banana can cause constipation. Grapes, sultanas and BF are good for 'unblocking'.
