Has anyone been bitten and what happened? This morning ds woke up with a red swollen hand and elbow, his elbow looks like its got a golf ball under the skin and his hands swollen enough where you cant even see his knuckles :( the whole top it is quiet swollen

The pic of his hands kinda cr@ppy though but you can see what i mean by his elbow,
besides the burning feeling when i touch them his ok, and his temps up a little, i took him to the doctor though. He said some people have different reactions and took a swab to test to see what actually bit him. He said some people get gangrene some are ok, some get a flare up in the same spot each year etc etc. His did treat it as a white tail bite though and gave him antibiotics.
I found a white tail in his bedroom this morning so thinking this is what it is though, will wait and see results though to confirm, as he didnt have these bites last night before putting him to bed. The doctor didnt say much just said watch him...
has anyone been bitten by one, can you share your experiences, good and bad please. I freak at all this stuff thats all and think the worst. He sais he feels like his hands on fire and his elbow is aching, i figure that meds will stop this though.
Thanks in advance

Poor little thing..
I have been bitten by a spider on my feet, and they thought it was a white tail not to sure though...
Keep a eye on the womb and it a red streak starts traveling up the arm.. take him to ER...
My uncle was bitten by one and didn't know for months after the fact, took him months to recover and went sceptic.
Please keep an eye on it, their venom is very toxic to skin and muscle. It can eat it away.

I just did a bit of research (Im interested in all this stuff), & it said on http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/White_tailed_spider?OpenDocument
Symptoms of a white tailed spider bite
Bites can occur anywhere on the body, but most often on arms and legs. The symptoms of a white tailed spider bite can include:
Localised irritation, such as a stinging or burning sensation
A small lump
Localised itchiness
Swelling
Discolouration of the skin
Ulceration of the bite (in some cases)
Nausea and vomiting (in some cases).First aid for a white tailed spider bite
Always try to keep the spider for identification purposes if you have been bitten. First aid suggestions to treat a white tailed spider bite include:
Apply an icepack to help relieve swelling
See your doctor if the skin starts to blister or ulcerate. But you have already been to the doctor, so I guess if it starts to look worse?
We have only had a suspected white tail spider biting here, & we took Dad to the hospital when it started to look veiny-ish? More purple I guess.
Hope I could help.
I hope he gets

Thanks everyone the only reason i took him to the docs was this morning it was quiet swollen and i put ice pack on it etc and it got worse so i figured it was something nasty that bit him. Even now his hand is like down over his wrist part now and the elbow has travelled more too but that was happening at the docs and he said to give him a double hit of the meds for first does which i have done so will watch it to make sure it doesnt get worse!
i hate spiders :(
O yuck! I hate white tails! I hope your bub is better soon, with no long lasting effects.:hugs:
Poor little guy :hugs: Hope the meds do the job :fingerscrossed:
I hate spiders too
Ouch poor lad :(
I got bitten on my shin about 5-6 years ago it was very inflamed like your sons hand and I got cellulitus (sp) in the area huge blister and for a year afterwards was getting small blisters all over my body just coming up. I was given antibiotics as I did get a bit sick the first week to ten days. Now I have no symptoms didn't after that first year.
Hope it goes soon for him!

My dd had one of these on her head the other day lucky my mum noticed it and took it off,my mum had it on her arm and i said quick take it off its a white tail. They were both lucky they weren't bitten.
I have not been bitten by one but have heard a few bad stories,i hope your ds is ok and recovers quickly :hugs:
Im a nurse and have looked after a few what were asumed to be white tailed spider bites. One theory is that the problem comes from the fact that the white tails live amoung dead leaves and or on the floor scavaging around in the debri and therefore they can carry nasty bacteria or fungi on their legs and fangs. So that it is not necessarly their venom that causes any problems, rather an infection caused by them breaking the skin and introducing bacteria or fungi. this seems to eplain why some people have no problems and others have nasty infections.
Obvioulsy the ones I have seen have been quite nasty...otherwise the kids woudn't havebeen admitted, but they have all healed up ok with a course of iv then oral antibiotics.
Your son's sounds and looks quite nasty, though not the worst I've seen. The doctor has done the right thing by prescribing antibiotics. However, if despite having started them earlier today his arm seems to be more painful or the redness is continuing to track it would be best to get him seen at an ER as he may need intravenous antibiotics if the oral ones are not kicking in. It's probably worth trying an antihystermine as well to help bring the swelling down.
Poor little man. Hope it's starting to feel better.

We still look like we have a balloon hand and elbow and its starting to itch but he is saying its not hurting now, apparently now it doesnt feel like its on fire it feels like his touched mums coffee LOL i love how kids describe things. I guess the itching an ease of pain is a good thing, results show it was awhite tail as well but thankfully the doc started him on the antibiotics so we shouldnt have any after effects, i hope :)

his on clarytine (sp?) and panadol if needed. "(phernagen nocks him out for days) i have been doing the ice pack thing too its not hot to touch as such though but gp did say its quiet normal as it would be the infection drawing. in general his ok though seems happy and he tells me if its bothering him too

I hate spiders....
The other day in was in the kitchen preparing a bottle for ds and a 'white tail' crawled along the bench... I just screamed and then looked through the whole house.... Got rid of cobwebs i'd missed and just went nuts cleaning....
White tail spiders scare me soooooooooo much....
I have a mossy net that goes over ds cot cause i'm so paranoid.... I'm forever checking his bed....
But how much does a mossy net really prevent creepy crawlies?...
I was going to get one of those powerpoint things that deters spiders etc....
I'm definitely going to get one now....
We also have a huge ant problem which is trying to be resolved but Melbourne has one of the largest ant colonies in Australia..... It's horrible....
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH I just want to go and have a shower now.... I'll check on ds first...
Punkbaby, i hope all is improving with your little man... Poor little guy... Lots of :hugs:...
What anti-biotics did they prescribe him out of curiosity? (and if you don't mind me asking:D)...
Cheers!! x x

They gave him flopen apparently its penicillian based as he said if he couldnt have penecillian he couldnt have it so figure thats what it is. We have a ikky pussy yucky blister like thing on each bite mark which i assume will pop but not touching it. Today his better he said it feels not hot now, which is a good sign.
I am with you essjay spiders suck i dont mind ones that dont cause damage but these freak me, our house is pretty much uncluttered as we havent been here long but i have been going through our house too. DS has a car/police bed which is rather low so thinking i either lift that every day or i get him one that is higher now, problem is his just started sleeping in it Grrr
Flopen is a good antibiotic... Excellent for difficult infections...
the blisters will eventually pop but what would concern me is that the puss may spread the infection.... Have you been told to cover it up? or apply an antiseptic around the area to prevent possible spread? Just curious.... Every doc is different...
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH spiders....
I agree whole heartedly about your boy's bed....
Stop those 'mongrel creepy crawlies' from getting in there........
:hugs: to your little man... x x

Well it seems to have stopped things getting worse and helped which is great when he had a bath at night i have put a cap of dettol in the bath, he wont let me touch the wound directy so i figured this was the next best thing till they actualy do pop,i have put a small patch over each one so if we do ooze there is something to catch things. His really anti "dont fix me etc" as his had a bad run in the past but when his sleeping i know i can give them a good clean up if it come to that :)
:hugs:Hope he gets better real quick:hugs:
