My SIL puts her children down in their cot with a bottle of milk.

Just interested if this is a practice that other people do or if they are against.

Could you give me some pros or cons

Thanks

I've heard that its not good for their teeth...the milk can sit in their mouth and the sugars eat away at the teeth while they sleep.

I do, however, put Andrew to bed sometimes with a sipper cup of water. No harm done there :)

Hi rockabye.....I was actually watching a TV programe about this the other day.

The doctors were actually against it as it rots the children teeth (milk contains a lot of sugar too) from constant sucking and lying down the milk tends to be in the mouth a bit longer rather than being swallowed straight away like in a normal feeding.

My old neighbour used to do this with her children up until they were about 5 years old and by the time they were in school they were already getting fillings in their teeth as they were rotten and stained.

I believe I will not do this with milk but more likely with water when I have children as I have seen what the milk does first hand, but you know what, each mother has her own opinion on this and in some cases I am guessing that it is used as a pacifier to help the child sleep.

But read up on it anyway and see what you think.

I dont personally do it because Ive heard the bad for teeth thing too. Just cause it can pool in the mouth while they doze off.
Would never criticise another mums choice for doing it though.

Bad for teeth. Bad habit to get into as they then have to learn to go to sleep without the bottle.

I used to do this with DD1 and I will never do it again!!

Thankfully her teeth are fine (at the moment) - took her to the dentist for the first time about a week ago. The main problem I had was weaning her off the bedtime bottle - she drank out of a cup all day but wouldn't go to bed with anything else but a bottle of warm milk. So when she turned 3 - just before christmas - we gave Santa her bottles and he swapped them for 2 brand new WATER bottles with straws in them (those no spill, rubber straw ones) for her to have BEFORE she gets into bed and thank santa it worked!! Now she has milk instead of water with dinner and water instead of milk before bed. She sometimes asks for a bottle of water to be left beside her bed but rarely wakes up to drink any of it.

DD2 has only ever been put into bed with a bottle a couple of times through the day when she just won't settle but always just water and mainly for the sucking of it as she has started to go off her dummy - yippee. Usually I give her a bottle about half an hour to an hour before she has a sleep and then she has water out of one of those straw bottles before she gets put down for a sleep.

Ah the lessons we learn after the first one!!
