Hi all
I know its been mentioned elsewhere, but my Gyno suggested I try drinking a cup of Green Tea daily.
Why is green tea good for you?
According to some of the doctors, switching over to green tea can help you lose weight, reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, or maybe even get pregnant, if you're a woman and so inclined.
In the past, women having difficulty conceiving might have been advised to limit their caffeine intake. But recent studies suggesting that stimulating drinks, and specifically green tea, might boost fertility. In a study conducted at Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program of Northern California in Oakland, researchers found that women who drank more than one half cup of caffeinated green tea every day doubled their odds of conceiving. No significant association was found for other caffeinated beverages; therefore researchers concluded that a chemical component of tea other than caffeine might have been responsible for the increase in fertility.
Hi KittyKatz
I've heard lots of ladies praising green tea.
Normally, I do drink a cup here and there, but this cycle I decided to drink more. I had at least 2-3 cups a day (sometimes more) from AF to O, mainly to increase and improve my EWCM. Then I ended up getting my BFP!
Of course, I don't know how much the green tea contributed to it, but it's always worth a shot. It's good for us in more ways then one! :flowerz:

ile green tea has been studied for its numerous health benefits, there’s at least one area of interest that needs more attention.
Can drinking green tea really enhance fertility?
Now that's the one-hundred-thousand dollar question! There’s a lot of conflicting opinions and research results pertaining to that subject. We'll try to be fair and present both sides of the issue.
Any tea made from the Camellia sinensis bush contains caffeine. On the bright side of the teapot, green tea has only one-sixth to one-tenth of the amount of caffeine that a similar amount of regular coffee contains.
For those of us who are trying to watch our caffeine intake, that’s a good deal. If you need a caffeine fix though, green tea isn't going to give you what you're looking for. Better start looking for the nearest Starbucks.
How can drinking green tea increase fertility?
A study done by the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program in Oakland, California revealed that the chances of conceiving doubled for woman who daily drank more than one- half cup of green tea containing caffeine (American Journal of Public Health, 1998). Because this wasn't the case for the other tested caffeinated beverages, caffeine wasn't deemed the causing agent. Some credit was given to the possibility that the polyphenols and hypoxanthine, compounds found in tea, resulted in a greater number of viable embryos, and increased maturation and fertilizability of oocytes.
Another conclusion of this study was that the healthy lifestyle of many green tea drinkers, such as regular exercise and decreased smoking and fat intake, might also play a role in the enhanced fertility levels of the test subjects.
How can drinking green tea decrease fertility?
Tannic acids, an element found in green tea, have been shown to cause fertility problems and greater chances at miscarrying.
While not an "initial" fertility situation, rumor has it that EGCG, the main disease-fighting antioxidant known as catechins in green tea that have been found to impede the growth of tumors, might also effect the blood vessel growth of a developing embryo.
Another post-fertility issue related to an excessive intake of green tea involves the increased rate of birth defects.
Past studies have concluded that coffee consumption increases the risk of miscarriages and that caffeine intake enhances the negative effects of alcohol intake on fertility. While not directly related to green tea, caffeine is the potential cause of such problems.
Should I or shouldn't I drink green tea for fertility issues?
The best advice that we can give you is something you've heard before. Check with your doctor first. Do your homework. Then and only then can you make a truly educated and well-informed decision about a very delicate issue. Whatever you decide, we wish you the best of luck in your quest for that new addition to your family. Cheers...

I think if you were to drink 5 cups a day it wouldn't be so good because of the caffeine, but 1 or 2 cups a day i think i'll try.
I'm drinking Lipton's Green Tea with Mint, the plain green tea i find a bit bitter.
I hate green tea :( but I'm going to learn to love it. :sunshine:

The best way to drink green tea is to use the large leaf, not the bag.
Steep for 3 minutes, no more or it will go bitter.
I just use a coffee plunger with the leaf.
Much nicer than the bag!
Ains did you leave any leaves:fingerscrossed:

The kind I had was the Madura Green Tea bags - it's nice, not so strong. I just added a dash of cold water to it to make it cool down a bit quicker.
By the way - I didn't know that about mint! I have a lot of mint (will have to stop that now!). Last time I was PG I had peppermints in my bag and found sucking on them eased my nausea - I hope that didn't contribute to my m/c! No, I shouldn't think like that!
Does anyone know why it's bad?
Well I should have just got the green tea and NOT the hpt:o :crying: what an idiot so much for not testing until Saturday.
Have no idea about why you shouldnt have peppermint my "bible" just says to avoid large doses of peppermint leaves in pregnancy.

awwwww big :hugs: ladies, I've been lucky enough not to have troubles conceiving. Heres :fingerscrossed: for your :bfp: in dec.
In regards to the green tea, I'v been drinking 1-3 cups a day since I had my ds 4 yrs ago - went totally of normal tea. And after I had my IUD taken out in May 06 I was pregnant 6 weeks later, unfortunately I miscarried that one but then fell pregnant 4 weeks later. Could purely be coincidence, who knows???? But anything is worth a shot ;)
Good Luck

If there are concerns as to the impact on the baby, just do what i do with my false unicorn root....
i take it from CD1 to O then stop while on the 2WW. I do the same with Vitex. I read about how good vitex is, and then i read that the yam component is used in some countries as the ONLY means of contraception. Yet the yams are accredited to so many twins in other countries. I just dont get all the opposing information on EVERYTHING remotely related to TTC.
I posted this in TTC # 1 but i'll put it here too.....
I'm always told i'm not very positive. If this is true, then how come i can POAS (in the shopping centre - couldn't wait the 2 minutes til I got home), get a :bfn: and go meh, its alright its only negative cause I didn't use first morning urine. At NO point have I considered I'm not UTD. just means i have to test again in the morning :) i'm pregnant, until AF tells me otherwise.
Now tell me i'm not positive hahaha
I shall not eat mints
I shall not eat mints
I only had three today so this is a good start.

Funny how a day can change a woman. I'm over it and waiting for AF. lol. Maybe its my hormones playing tricks - see still a glimmer of positivity hahaha. God I'm bored at work. I wanna go home. :geek:

Just make mine a green tea.........With a nice head on it:hissy:
Well, I'm only on CD3 so I'll be drinking plenty tomorrow night at my friend's wedding!
Oh & I hate green tea, but I'm forcing myself to drink 2 per day. :barf:
So how are the happy green tea drinkers going. Don't tell me we have all given up after a week because of the taste.
No pain No Gain:goodvibes:
Eh, I'm still drinking the evil stuff....2 a day.....one mint one vanilla.....the vanilla one's even more evil! :barf:
I live in China, so we drink loads of green tea - but I prefer Jasmine tea. It's lovely and fragrant, especially if you don't steep it for too long. I always loved Jasmine, but I only recently learned that it's actually green tea, where the tea leaves have been exposed to jasmine flowers to get the smell. Give it a try!

Personal experience: I would make iced DECAF green tea (the regular can dehydrate you and make ewcm worse) by seeping 5 bags in 2litres of hot water, then sticking it in the fridge (and I added some sweetener as well). I drank about 1litre of it a day and had AMAZING ewcm this cycle! I would recommend it to anyone! Good luck! xx

30-11-2007, 10:57
Ok i will give 2 cups a go.
Also i never used to drink coffee, but over the past 4 months or so i have coffee whenever i am around proper coffee machines! Maybe i should cut back on the coffee or ask for decaf??? What do you reckon?:detective:
(i always order a QUARTER strength latte) maybe 3 times a week. (sometimes twice a day)
kittykatz
30-11-2007, 11:10
There are SOOO many different opinions on this. Alot say no caffeine when TTC, but others say 1 - 2 cups a day is fine.
Alot of people change to decaf, but apparently the chemicals and process it takes to decaffeinate coffee makes it worse than the caffeinated stuff.
For me, i have spent time finding a reliable GP and Gyno who i trust, and go by what they tell me because EVERYONE has a different opinion.
I still have starbucks maybe twice a week, and green tea in between.
I felt the shares in green tea were starting to drop I thought I would get the thread back on the front page:flowerz::flowerz:

Hello to all you green tea buffs! I have been following your green tea thread for a couple of weeks and decided to go out and buy some for this cycle. I hate tea but then again have only ever had normal black run of the mill tea. I usually drink 1 coffee a day in the morning. Just the instant nescafe stuff.
So I went out and bought Madura Green tea with lemon. I am on CD12 I just tried my first half a cup (I've put the other half in the fridge as the box suggests it can be drunk chilled so I thought I'd try that too) and it's quite nice actually! I'm really surprised seeings as I can't stand 'tea'!
Anyway, my question is - how many cups a day am I supposed to drink and is it over certain cycle days or for the whole cycle etc.?
Also is it ok to have the flavoured green teas? I'm gettting the impression that it is ok as a few of you have mentioned the mint one but can anyone tell me if a flavoured one is any less effective in assisting fertility?

Hi Mummynow,
I don't think there is any problem with having the flavoured green teas, as it is still full of all that green tea goodness (polyphenols, antioxidants etc) :) Currently I am drinking about 4 cups a day but that's just my personal preference, I love the stuff. I don't think there is any magic formula, so just go with the amount of cups and frequency that you feel you like drinking. Happy drinking!

Giag read somewhere that you should avoid it during 2ww cause you don't absorb as much folate or something when drinking it...I could have the wrong absorption thing..but I am sure there are articles out there!
