View Full Version : I'm going to be a School Mum! Where does the time go?

DH & I attended the parents' Prep Orientation tonight.

And as we walked hand in hand up the street to start the night, I was reminded of how we walked hand in hand up the street to welcome our DS into the world 5 years ago.

I wondered what will this next stage of his life bring? Who will he be when we next attend an orientation evening for him?

And where did the time go? When did the baby that caught my breath and gripped my heart become a boy starting school who catches my breath and grips my heart.

And how do I parent him through a world where I can't control those who put into him?

They played a song for us about what will happen if we are brave. It was directed at our kids and all that they can be if we let them be free enough to be brave, but I thought as parents we need to be brave too.

So, for all of those who might be attending school orientation nights, a salute: to the time that has passed, and the time that is to come! May we all find the courage to let them grow to be .... can't wait to see who they will be.

Signed

That's what I thought until I found out J's school doesn't have a tuckshop!:banghead:

Lovely sentiments though MM, I felt exactly the same this time last year.

My 3rd little darling is about to start Prep next year too, and a I can tell you it doesn't get any easier just because I've been through it twice already. Its exciting and sad at the same time. I'll probably be worse when No. 4 starts school because she's the baby. In 2009 my eldest will start high school and I find that scary, where has the time gone.

My dd is just about to finish prep and head into the bold brave world of formal numeracy and literacy. It has been a year of ups and downs but overall an exciting journey. My oldest is heading into year 4 and that year will bring the first school camp rite of passage:crying:

Only one left at home now, she doesn't start school till 2009. I can't believe it!

Nevermind mamaduke, even though your school doesn't have a tuckshop there are always other opportunities to be involved, there is always a need for sausage sizzle and cake stall arms:D

MM, what special words you have written, you should print & keep that for the future to remember how you felt at this time. DD starts prep next year too, although she is ready for it, I may need my hand held:crying:

I know how you all feel, my DD started Prep this year and I couldn't believe she had grown so quickly. The prep kids have a different uniform and when I was getting her fitted for her uniform for next year she looked to little to be going into grade 1:no:

My first baby goes to prep next year too :crying: I still can't work out where 5yrs has gone. The school he will go to doesn't do an orientation for the kids, just a 'parent info session', which was a few weeks ago. Lucky for DS he will get to see what prep is like in the next few weeks coz I'm gonna take him in for a little while one day (my mum works there so she ok'd it with the teacher).
As much as having DS home all the time frustrates me, he gets bored easily so definatly ready for prep, I know I'll miss him next year when he isn't home to bug me.

My DD school only has tuckshop on tues, thurs and fri and you have to order it, they can't go up and buy their lunch.

My eldest is starting 'real school' next year (year 1) and we had the orientation meeting the other morning. I am so excited for him yet it makes me sad at the same time. He has grown up so much since starting prep.

oh and our school doesn't have a tuckshop either :p They can have lunch orders on fridays and they are catered by the local bakery.

Lunches catered by a bakery would be great  The school I went to in NZ was like that.
The school my kids are going to has tuckshop every day, you do have to order the food for each break tho (I think hot food is only available for lunch). I doubt I'l use it much tho, DS isn't really into the foods the tuckshop has.

Our school was the same only a parent info session, I thought they'd have something for the kids.
