View Full Version : What are my chances...?
Hey there,
We've been trying since February 07 and it's getting a bit depressing. Both my sisters in law have fallen pregnant first time (I'm really happy for them, but trying to squash down my own disappointment!)
I've had ultrasound and progesterone serum tests and they looked okay. Hubby still has to do a sperm test.
Does anyone know about how a person's tubes are tested? What's involved?
To top it all off, my cycle seems to be getting shorter (average 24-26 days) AND it started showing up on day 21 this month and now it's day 23 and it still hasn't come on properly. I know it's just a glitch, but it makes me think I might be pregnant - although i know I'm not. Life is cruel.
Any encouragement would be greatly appreciated! :( Can anyone tell me their story of how it took ages but they got there in the end?

Hi bonnie,
I know how you feel! We've been trying since Dec 06 and we've also had all the tests and everything seems to be fine. My FS has booked me in for a Lap in Feb and that's when she will look to see if my tubes are blocked etc. But I think there is a way for them to do it via ultrasound but I'm not 100% sure. All the best and hope you get there soon!

my cycles were 14 days also and i managed to fall pregnant dont give up hope it does happen only took me a couple of cycles.
Hi ladies,
Thanks for your responses. It's comforting to know someone understands what it feels like to always be the one waiting, and saying "no, I'm still not pregnant". I'm sorry to hear you're in the same boat - but at least it makes my boat less lonely! And congrats to those of you who've made it already! I can't imagine the joy you must feel when you get a BFP.
I'm trying to keep positive and most of the time I'm okay. Just sometimes, some months (like this one) I get myself believing I'm pregnant even though I tell myself there's no reason to think I am - then I get really disappointed.
BUT you're right when you say never give up. I think I'll try and get my GP to book me in for some kind of tube check. DH is a bit nervous about his sperm test. He's going to do it on Saturday.
I'll also get on some good vitamins and maybe try to shift a few kilos off my middle age spread.
:gloomy: thinking happy thoughts

Hi Bon,
Frustrating isn't it. We been trying for #2 and it just isn't happening. So many other people we know have been trying after us and already got pregnant and had their babies.
I have had a laparoscopy. Whilst under general anaesthetic 3 small incisions were made in my abdomen. One in the belly button, another just below my knicker line and a third over to the right between the two others. The surgeon took a look inside and took photo's for my file. I also had a dye test to see if my tubes were blocked. It was a day procedure and all went as planned. It was ok and not that painful just a bit uncomfortable especially a few days later when everything was healing.
Thank goodness all my bits are in working order and I had a tiny patch of endometriosis which was burnt away during the lap. The Surgeon advised me that there is an increased chance of conceiving in the 3 months following a lap but unfortunately that hasn't happened for us. Currently trying AI/IUI.
Best of luck
Ince

Hi Bonnie,
There are two tests that they can do.
1 is a lap - as described by IncyWincy .... or
2 - they can inject dyes into your tubes (not sure how but not as invasive or involved as a lap) and see via ultrasound.
My story - tried for 3 extremely long yrs with no luck before I finally convinced DH to see someone. Had a lap - diagnosed with endometriosis, had a very large ovarian cyst removed and have very 'sluggish' tubes (almost blocked) - FS said I would not be able to conceive naturally and would need IVF. Did cycle tracking for 3 months and fell pregnant !!!!!!!
I have a beautiful bubby - and am trying to do it all again...though going with IVF this time around.
It is soooo worth everything you go through - but very very very tough.
Hello Ince, Hi Katiesmum,
Thanks for letting me know what you're going through and what's involved in a tube check. I wonder if they'll start with the dye and then move on to the laparoscopy?
I've got a great GP but she's not been as stressed as me about my age being a factor. I wish we did all these checks 10 months ago! I think I'll really try and give her a hurry up on getting the tube check done now. I'd just like to know.
Sorry Ince to hear you didn't fall after your lap. I really hope you get better results with the AI. It's good to know all your bits are working and cleaned up. That's exactly the news I want to hear about my own bits.
Congrats Katiesmum - it's great to hear you were able to have your baby after three years of trying. Especially when your doctor said you wouldn't be able to!!! That's the kind of good news everyone wants to hear! you should shout it from the rooftops!!
Thanks for responding to my depressed thread! I do feel better now.
All I want now is for my period to decide what it's doing - it's being really weird. I'm getting my hopes up, but I know that as soon as I go and get a HPT my period come on properly - I sometimes feel like my body is working against me!
Hi!
Fantastic topic!
I am in a similar boat to you...
32, TTC 1st Bub, long term pill user, been off it since april 07, irregular cycles...yuk!!!
I haven't had any test done as yet as they say 12 months trying before you go to get checked out.
My fiance is 27 so has age a little more on his side.
I am constantly worried as my mum tried for 2 years with her first and she was early 20's...so I get paranioid that I will never succeed...
It is soooo depressing every month watching and waiting and wishing so hard...
:rain:
I'm feeling it too girls...right there with you!!!
Good:bfp: luck!!!
Hello there,
This boat is more crowded than I thought! I like the company! Is there a general thread you girls go to with other people who have been trying for a while?
I totally agree it's depressing waiting, Jolenje. Well, sometimes it seems okay - there are months when I don't think about it too much.
Some months my hopes get the better of me even though I try and squish them down. This is one of those months - so after another BFN this morning my hopes are fully crushed and my chin is sticking to the ground.
I hope you don't worry too much about your mum's experience. If you've been on the BCP, hopefully that's all that's causing the delay. But I know it's hard to keep the paranoia at bay. I've got quite a large helping of that myself!
Oh well. I'm going to try and take Ains's advice...but I forgot where I put my fresh happy feelings!

There is a way you can be tested at your local XRay place where a cathetar type thing is inserted and dye is pumped through your tubes while you are wide awake. I had this done a couple of months ago, it was a little bit uncomfortable but i was up and moving around straight away with a little bit of spotting. I think its called a HSG or something if you want to research it on the net a bit more.
Thanks. My doc's gone on holidays but I'll ask her for a referral. I really want to get the dye test done because I've been reading (actually just googling lol) it can improve chances of pregnancy.

Hey Bonnie - it is actually the laparoscopy that can increase your chances of pregnancy (as they flush your tubes and can often treat endometriosis if you have it.
I dont think the dye test increases your change of pg - but will tell you if your tubes are clear.... if you get a referral your FS may do the dye test first (as much less invasive - lap need general anasthetic) and do blood tests to check your ovulation .....
Anyway - you are certainly not alone. Come along to the testing calender threads and chat to everyone .... they will answer all of your questions.
