I have been contemplating for some time introducing a formula feed once a day for a few reasons:

*bubs is feeding every 2 hours through the day (normally goes longer overnight) and takes almost an hour to feed. I cant even get to the shops quickly without having to feed her while there.
*i really want to get back to the gym, i feel great but again because of the frequency of the feeds it would be impossible to fit in a work out.
- both of these issues could be solved if i swapped a BF for a FF and left DD with someone to look after.

The odd occasion of DH and I going out (we have a 30th and a wedding coming up in the next month or two) we would be able to go out and have DD babysat. Of course it could also mean DH and other family members can have a bit extra bonding time with baby and i can get a bit of a break. Dont get me wrong, i love BF, id just love to also 'complete' the picture and have the best of both worlds IYKWIM.

Ok, Ok, i hear you.. I can express, but I have tried this and it wasnt very succesful, it wasnt pleasant (i have a Avent manual pump) and it takes up time that I just dont have at the moment with such frequent feeds and minimal time between them. Plus i really believe if i can make this mix succesful it will mean i will BF for longer as i will have that flexability to make it that bit easier.

I understand that if i replace 1 feed a day with formula then my supply will drop that 1 feed which shouldnt be an issue if i continue with that 1 feed daily... however if i need to feed more than 1 a day (in the instance of the wedding for example) i will have to express to ensure my supply doesnt drop more, im happy with this as it will only be on the odd occasion.

DD has taken EBM and water (tried it for 'wind') fine from a bottle and has taken a dummy from birth well (not that she uses it most of the time, id just rather her suck that than her fingers) She likes to suck on anything!

I would like to hear from people who have done/tried to combine BF with a regular FF and hear how they went, how it changes things etc.
Please, i dont want to hear that I can just express and forget the FF, i just want to hear from those who have had experiance with what I am trying to do.

I do understand she is still young and that this could muck up my BF.. that is why I am wanting sories of experiance and advice and not rushing into this change.

Thank you.

Hi Nicole,

In the first month or so we used to give Aoife a formula feed late at night, every second night or so (if I remember correctly). I would always express as well - this was mainly done to share out the load with hubby, and so I could get an extra hour or so sleep.

We did not have any problems with her drinking anything at that point. I did not have too many issues with supply , again, I was expressing after most feeds anyway, trying to build up my supply.

The only thing I would suggest, is that you try out an electric pump to see if that would make life easier for you - it certainly did for me.

As it happened, after a few months my daughter refused all bottles, ebm or formula and would drink from the breast only.
