I was wondering what the Lib voters would make of his Rove appearance! :D I know the Kevin07 cheer squad would be pleased but the real test is how the other lot rate him

I think he was quite funny too.

NO doubt he is very very likeable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a liberal voter and I can see it why SO many people like him. He was keeping up with Rove! It's kinda scary, I can see the personality vote, but it's okay as well, if that makes any sense.

It's gonna be a very close election. The way I see it, he has 3 years to prove himself.

Rove is GREAT .. I haven't watched him in SO long. I'll be watching him every week again. night night

There is just something about he that freaks me out... I'm sure it is just me though.

I think that was roves last episode for the year IAdoreYou ... but I'm sure there will be repeats around for awhile..

I too was impressed - but I probably would have been more impressed if he had ANSWERED the who would you turn gay for question properly .. instead of copping out with babble about his wife .. DER .. its not for real .. you doofus .. just pick a male ...

I remember looking at Kevin when he was 'just' a local member up here in brissie .. thinking wow .. he has charisma .. so I'm not all that surprised to see how he has acted as opposing leader - he even managed the ear wax comments from Rove well ..

xx

still not sure which way my vote will go on the day ..

I would love JH to go on Rove, but I just don't think he would be comfortable in that enviroment, which is fine. I need someone that can run a country not make me laugh on a Sunday night..that's what I have Kevin07 for...

Rove seemed to be thinking along the same lines as me there... LOL

I thought he did a pretty good job, except where he made out like he just wants to get out there and talk policy, not get bogged down in the whole anti-Howard stuff... hmmm... not quite what I'm getting from your ads Rudd... where every second word is "Howard"; Howard doesn't, unlike Howard, etc. etc.

I think the main difference there is that Bob Brown isn't gunning for PM - he's got a fairly safe Senate seat and nowhere near the pressure that Kevin is facing at the moment.

But I like Bob Brown too :)

lavenderpegasus
18-11-2007, 23:05
but it is obvious that Rudd is selling himself to the young family/young people vote, so you would think that most young hip people would find that sort of thing appealing...kinda like that movie man of the year...(is that the one with Robin Williams)

Huge generalisation

SassyMummy
18-11-2007, 23:09
Thought he was pretty good - he still may have had on his "pollie face" but really, with the election less than a week away, and the possibility of Rove throwing silly questions his way, he HAD to keep his "pollie face" on.

I know I wouldn't want to say something silly that could be blown out of context in all other areas of media... then the people who didn't watch the episode would only have crazy headlines to read, and whatnot.

I think he was silly and funny just the right amount...

The Greens leader was pretty good though - but I suppose like Odessa said, he's not got too much to worry about like Rudd does.

To me, it speaks volumes when a potential PM is willing to be a bit silly and risk having immature fun poked at him... it gives me a sense of "he's just like us," so I'm glad he went on, (rather than turning the offer down like Howard always does).

ETA - if people want "young and hip," then don't bother voting - none of them are young OR hip.

I really dislike how young voters are talked about like we're idiot just voting by picking "which is cooler." No doubt some young voters are idiots... older voters can be just as stupid.

After watching the Rove interview, if anyone wants "cool and hip," maybe they should vote the Greens. That guy seemed cooler and hipper than Rudd or Howard.

 we answered the same thing Jen!

As for the ear wax question, he reckons he was just scratching his lip.....hmm sure ya were:D

Before he made the scratching lip joke he all but admitted that he had eaten it. We know he did, he knows he did, I thought he dealt with that quite well.

Overall I was impressed with the interview. There was one part where he lied. When Rove asked him if he hated Howard he said no, but he was immediately in a fighters crouch. I think Rudd hates him a lot, and for me that isn't a bad thing. I hate him a lot. I think he has dismantled too many of the institutions that identified us as Australians. Today I see Australians as less tolerant of others, I see them as more selfish, I don't see them barracking for the underdog any more., Those attitudes have all come from the top. It has taken Howard eleven years to turn us into a bunch of intolerant selfish w@nkers. Instead all those Aussie qualities have been replaced by a "Values" test which any Minister in Howard's Government would fail before they'd even written their names on the test paper.

BlueGin, you mentioned Rudd attacking Howard. When you are the Leader of the Opposition and you are trying to lead your party to victory in an election it is near impossible to attack Government policy without mentioning Howard. I think he does it way more constructively than Howard. Compare these two sentences:

"The Government lied about rises in interest rates. Howard has to answer to the Australian people."

"If Rudd gets in the Unions will take over and the economy will be destroyed."

See what I mean? Labor has attacked the Coalitions record of truthfulness and it's policies that, to them, have disadvantaged Australians. The Government has tried to scare the Australian people and where scare campaigns don't work, they have tried to buy them. The governments negative campaign has really turned me off.[/rant]

Heh, back to the OP. I was impressed by Rudd. He does have charisma and will be a PM that will go down in the history books. He did leave me with a sour note though when he fudged the gay question. If he'd said "Bronwyn Bishop. What? She's a woman?" I would have cracked up, but then, I'm a bit odd.

If Rudd can be prepared to meet with his younger target audience and be prepared to appeal to them on their level I am all for him.

I thought that he done really well, and as for the gay question, I think that just reflects on the medias treatment of all pollies, you can't really joke about too many things without it coming back to haunt you in one way or another. I thought he could have just said Straunie, and left it at that.
He done a great job of the ear wax questions, and I think is just a very likable guy.

Well the majority of Australians know very little about politics, so it is a popularity competion, to a certain extent...and that goes for both sides. A LOT of people vote only on which leader appeals best to them, and nothing to do with policies. At least he had the guts to go on the show, Howard has always refused.

It was quite funny....and I'm glad he agreed to appear, if he's courting that youth vote he has to appeal to them properly!

He seemed very guarded to me, like he was doing it between gritted teeth. He also seemed really tired, poor guy is probably getting less sleep than me (and with a newborn I'm not getting much!). He just seemed a bit nervous that's all. His responses sounded a little scripted like he had really prepared for each question. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Why on earth was he wearing a suit?? It's ROVE Kev, dress it down a little, it's not a job interview....well actually it is a job interview, for the top job but if you're appealing to the younger vote then at least dress like them a little bit!

He really did prove to be a nerd in every sense. But I like that....nerds for PM! :smiliedance:

I do... however I'm talking about the fact that Liberal also take the time to tell us a policy or two... rather than only bagging out the opposition. Every time Rudd was questioned last night about what he'd do, he didn't say what he'd do but what he didn't like about Liberal's way of doing it.
That's really annoying me lately with him, he has the potential to be a great leader I think, but where will he lead us?

Oh and it is a popularity contest- who has the most popular policies, the most popular candidates and apparently who looks better is funnier, comes across as more intelligent so and so forth it's all about popularity if they wern't popular they wouldn't win.

I would hope people choose on substance over style, though the frequent mention of John Howard's eyebrows make me think otherwise sometimes (sadly).

At least he had the guts to go on the show, Howard has always refused.

On the contrary, I think it's courageous of Howard to knock Rove back repeatedly, as he knows people will bag him out for it. He wisely realises it isn't the best showcase for him... :p

Rudd has spent the week talking up his policies. If you look at the threads here you will see several about Labor's policies, but none on the Coalitions'. The interview with Rove was a personal piece. It wasn't about what he'd do when he's PM, it was a chance for Australia to get to know him better. Rove brought Howard up, Rudd answered, that's it.

I go back to the election ads. Labor is saying we will do this because Howard hasn't. The Coalition is saying that if Labor gets in the Unions will own Parliament. That's all the Coalition has.

On the contrary, I think it's courageous of Howard to knock Rove back repeatedly, as he knows people will bag him out for it. He wisely realises it isn't the best showcase for him... :p

Rudd got knocked. Look at this thread. I think Howard knows that he will be majorly outwitted by Rove and won't do it. Rove showed that night that he was quite happy to put Rudd on the spot. No one does that to the PM, because he doesn't let anyone ask him those kind of questions. And the electorate has accepted Howard's dodge as if it is normal and accepted. We are supposed to live in a transparent democracy. Looking at the last eleven years you wouldn't think so.

*beeps out expletives* WT??? Did the LIberal party pay for that interveiw?? Anna Coren you are a dumb twit, and a poo on the name of journalism.!!!

Today Tonight is hardly the paragon of journalistic integrity. I watched them put the Chaser "under the hammer". I saw bits and pieces - wasn't it the two of them loving each other up like they're mates? John insisting Peter was really very funny, Peter praising John's "work ethic"

This made me queasy:
Asked what they disliked about each other, Mr Howard would only nominate the treasurer's moves to rein in his spending, while Mr Costello said they did not always agree on everything.
"I like Holdens, he likes Fords," Mr Costello joked.
"And he doesn't put the cap on the toothpaste."
