Hi there

Does anyone know if you can worm a baby under 12mths at all ????

My 8.5mth old has just started daycare one day a week and I have been told by a friend that it would be a good idea to worm her.

We also have to inside dogs who are regularly wormed along with hubby and I but our little chicken so far has no protection.

She has what I can only gather as bad nappy rash at the moment due to a week of diarrhea(?)
She has been under the weather for almost a week and is now sick with a cold. The diarrhea is constant though. The frequency is less now per day but it is never the less still watery muck.

I had her at the dr who recommended a stool sample which I am aiming to collect and also some Donnlylix.

I am thinking now it may be worm related as she is having no fruit or vegies at the moment to upset anything and I am only giving her bland farex and her bottles.

Any help would be useful

I'm not sure if it will help but you can try having a read through a previous thread on worms and children: Worms ... another yummy topic! (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/showthread.php?t=6905)

This whole issue of worms is new to me. We have 2 dogs who are on dewormers every month but I've never de-womed humans in our family. Even after DD started childcare. I agree if your DD is having unexplained diarrhea then maybe worms are a possibility... but can I ask why you regularly deworm yourself and your partner?

Hi there

When I say regularly de worm hubby and I, I mean that we worm ourselves with Combantrin once every six - 12months as recommended.

I have always done this as as a child we always had cats and whenever the cats were wormed, my mother would also worm the whole family.

I have always been told that you are more suseptible to worms if you have animals, even if they are wormed religiously as worms pass from animals to humans very easily and can quickly become an infestation.

I think you will find that the worming tablets for humans (eg combantrin etc) state that its a good idea to worm everyone and everything(pets) all at the same time.

I don't know if this is right or wrong but I have had over the years worms myself from time to time and I know that once I have the treatment then they are gone.
They would have had to have come from somewhere !!!!

Maybe its a question I need to ask my local pharmacy when next there.

Thanks for the info. I may need to have a talk with a chemist or my GP myself. I grew up with cats too but never was dewormed  Nor was it ever mentioned to me when DH & I adopted cats in Canada. Seems to be more of an issue when winters aren't cold? Anyways... thanks and good luck with your little one. I hope whatever is upsetting her settles down soon.

my fmil is a pharmacy assistant and it is a good idea to de-worm your family every 6-12 months but with bubs under 12 months only if u suspect they have worms.. i de-wormed coby when he started childcare... just to be safe

she said the way to check for worms on bub is when they are asleep pull down their nappy and shine a torch there and if you see glowing strings then they are worms...

it is fine to de-worm bub... just not too often... so once before she is 1 is fine...
like i said i did coby and he is aok
