Hi
I think weaning may be in our future soon :( DS is allergic to eggs and intolerant of salicylates, amines and glutamates. I have also been avoiding nuts, shellfish and dairy. I am finding the going very tough. We go to RPA Allergy unit. They say that neocate/ elecare is the best formula for sensitive bubs. I am concerned that DS will not take it after having BM for 8+ months. I plan on asking them more about formula at my next appointment but wanted to ask you ladies why can't he have a HA formula - there is no milk allergy? Not sure whether there is an intolerance, I guess we will have to test this. Can HA formula be given to intolerant cows milk bubs. I am thinking that HA will be more acceptable than elecare or neocate. Am I correct?
TIA I am totally clueless about formula.

Hi there hun...:hugs: to you...
I will answer this the best way i know how...
HA formula does indeed have the cows milk protein.
HA formula is partially hydrolyzed breaking down the ingredient making it easier to digest 'so to speak' it is designed for babies pre-disposed to allergies because of existent allergies in the immediate family ie: parent or sibling...
HA is not recommended for bub's that already have allergies and it would be my concern that HA will not prevent any further allergies...
Neocate & Elecare are excellent formulas and some babies actually take quite well to them... I know Neocate is quite palatable. They also have a new range out that have the added LCP's...

From what i have learnt from the paed and the wonderful & educated mums on bubhub is an allergy or multiple allergies can and sometimes lead to further allergies later in life and prevention is better than cure....
The script formulas will allow your little one's body to heal and hopefully grow out of the allergies/intolerances... HA will not do this...

I would take the advice of your specialists and go with the script formula... It's on the PBS and not that it's about cost BUT it's cheaper than 'off the shelf' which is a comfort to most mums as a product which is essentially preventing them from getting sick isn't costing them the earth...

This is of course my opinion... I have been through all of this with my paediatrician for ds as he has reflux which we believed to be a secondary symptom of an allergy or an intolerance... He is on 'normal' formula and has finally grown out his 'little problems'...

All the best... I hope i've helped in some way... x x

Nope, if he has allergies, best to go straight to Neocate or Elecare. My DD had milk protein intolerance and the HA did nothing to help her, soy or goat formula also has a very similar protein, so it may only make him worse and disrupt his feeding, which may cause even more problems in the long term. If he has diagnosed allergies, getting the script will be very easy, and it actually works out a lot cheaper than buying regular formula from the shops anyway :)

No problem! There is a friend of mine on here who went through a lot of what you're going through now. She had to eliminate a lot from her diet, and her son is now 15months old, and she's still bfing him, and he's over his allergies. If you want, I'd suggest PMing her for some tips/advice etc, she's really nice. MELL (http://www.bubhub.com.au/community/forums/z/index.php?z-profile=Mell).
