DD is almost 5 mths and now lifting her legs up in the air to touch everything and play which is great developmentally but......

When i put her to bed in her cot she uses her new found skill to push her blankets off her and I think this is why she now wakes up around 4am when it starts getting a little colder.

I have tried putting the blankets back on her before we go to bed but to no avail.

Any ideas??

My dd did that from the minute she was wrapped and only recently starting pulling the blanket up at bedtime!

I tried a few things like tucking in (which just frustrated her!), putting the blanket on before bed etc but none of those really worked.
They do have those kids sleeping bags, snug something? Which they can't kick off, but going to cost ya.

Otherwise go the simple route, if it's a cold night, dress her up in more - pants, socks, long sleeve top etc, or warm night, well a little less :p

The reason she wakes up is probably the 3-5am moment when the tempreture really drops and she can feel the cold. Thats what you want to avoid by putting clothes on to keep warm.

Oh even something like a jumpsuit, I'd put socks on underneath with a singlet and that would usually work.

Worth a try and goodluck

From day 1 dd has been a kicker. Nothing, not even wrapping could contain her. We ended up calling her Hudini. (she actully shares Hudini's bithday:detective: )
Things only got worse when she too learnt to put her legs in the air to play.
We find the only way to keep her covered is a baby sleepingbag. You can get ones for all seasons, all colours and all prices.
Ebay is a good place to look as if you buy them new from the baby shop they cost from $70 upwards.

I find the ones that have poppers on both shoulder fastenings are the best. Velcro not so good and ones that only undo on one side are a pain to get the arms in and out.
They should also have a zip that goe's all the way down one side so you can change the nappy during the night without taking the whole bag off.
Here is what one looks like

This is the same bag that I am using at the moment. It's great, but like I said it only clips together over 1 shoulder so it is hard to get dd's arm into the other side.

DS sleeps in a grobag - its a sleeping bag that comes in all different temp ratings. we have one ofr him for winter and one for summer.

They are recomended by sids and kids org too - they have them for sale on their website.

I second the grobag idea.

My DD does the same thing, and now I just bring her to bed with me around 4. She sleeps so soundly and it helps her to get warmer quicker :)

I used one of those sleeping bags, sort of like a gro bag I think, but at that age DS hated it, so I had to tuck him into bed tightly...

I had to tuck the blankets underneath the cot matress, (had to buy some throws, as they were longer than most cot blankets allowing me to do this) so it was firm and he couldnt get it off! So he stayed with blankets on ALL night!

I found that if I made the cot with the sheets and blankets on it sideways, rather than longways (so the sheets and blankets weren't tucked in at the foot of the cot, but from side to side) that they could kick their feet in the air, push the covers up, but not kick them off completely. I just made sure that the covers were tucked well under the side of the mattress that was furthest away from me (it was against the wall).

It doesn't matter that the foot of the cot doesn't have covers - their legs aren't that long anyway!

I like Roxy's idea

..I'm just wondering what on earth our grandmothers did before the invention of grobags...

probably just sewed the sheet into a slip... or sewed a sleeping bag

yeah thats what I done, but used bigger blankets as the blankets I had were tiny squares to lay across the cot, not to tuck in!

Thanks for being more explanatory than I was Roxy! Exactly what I done!

You're welcome! I'm glad I'm not the only one who has made the cot up that way - all my friends used to look at me like I had 2 heads when I explained how I made the cot up!

My DD has never liked to be wrapped (from day one). Grobags have been great for us  She's in a single bed now and we are still using winter pj's some nights - it's so hard..........

I put dd in a sleeping bag tonight and will see how she goes.
I didn't want to put too many blankets on her when we go to bed lately because it's been too hot but then you have the worry of them getting cold early hours of the morning....can't win.
But just the sleeping bag on it's own should be fine. Is that what you guys do?:flowerz: Thanks for your feedback too

DD1 who is nearly 7 months old is doing the exact same thing. Im having such a bad time at nights coz of this. Ive resorted to rocking her to sleep in my arms (standing). She drifts off (staring into space!) as Im shushing her. I keep shushing her as I lay her down onto her wrap, wrap her up tightly and shes asleep. This has only worked for the past 2 nights and yes some people may not agree with it but when you are desperate you will try anything really! I think it was also her way of telling me she wasnt quite full up from breast feeding and wanted a top up.

so far so good.

The sheet slips over the bottom end of the mattress and you pull it up over bubs. Hard to explain but it works. Only prob is that if you have a bub who loves to kick about she will get frustrated.

So I second the grobag idea. I have one for Summer and 1 for winter for DS. He loves them as he now sees them as a sleep association.

One tip tho - try to get one that is 100% cotton. Certain brands have polyester filling and this makes some babies get too hot.
