Hi Kate,
Wirh DS christening we invited close friends (including godparents, all 4 of them) and family. We had the service and then went to a park near the church and had a picnic. We provided all the food. MIL and my Mum brought some nibbles and then we asked everybody to BYO drinks and made it no alcohol as it was for a child and not an excuse to drink.
It was a great day and it didnt cost us a bomb either. Asking Mum and MIL to bring something helped out and it made them feel more involved as well.
Hope you have a wonderful day for DS christening. :smiliedance:
Yes do what monyfelix did!!!
we had our christening a few weeks ago and we had everyone back to ours. The church was at 9 am so everyone was back at ours at 10.30. We had cappacinos (we borrowed a proper machine) champagne and guava juice(yum) (not 4 me BTW Im BF) and AT 10.30 PEOPLE WANTED BEER!!!!:banghead:
I was stressed out because DH kept saying we need to get beer, and I was saying NO!!!
We spent $500 on catering and we had 60 people. It was too much and I didnt enjoy it very much..
DO THE PICNIC THING
we went to one a few months ago and it was so chilled out and lovely. You will need a wet weather alternitive though!
The picnic idea I like or else you could just have an afternoon tea. This could avoid the drinking thing and could even be cheaper than a lunch. Have a few cakes, pikelets with cream and jam, sandwiches, chips and dips, cheerios for kids etc. I would only invite family and close friends.
My sister had her ds christening at a park it was lovely, they had a friend who is a baptist minister and he came to do the religious part of the christening. Then we had lovely bbq. It was lots of fun as there was a playground for all the other children to play in.

Well heheh as you know we have our Christening/ Birthday party next Saturday :yelclap:
We are having the ceremony & party at my mums as well the church i wanted to use the priest wasnt keen etc anyways wont go into that here.
So my cousin who is a minister is going to do the ceremony in the backyard & we will then celebrate inside/ outside where ever !
Im actually more happy with this way as its more personal & we dont have to worry about everyone go backwards & forwards to the church etc.
We have invited family & friends only around the 30 mark as we didnt want it to big & plus the extra people we would have invited would only have been due to niceties not because we wanted them there IYKWIM !
Have fun i think its up there with wedding celebrations LOL !
Keep it simple.
It is more the point of the day...thed actual christening and the meaning of it. Don't stress too much about it. I like the idea of an afternoon tea.
With Em's christening day (she was 2 but, I know a bit late but I couldn't get her done before that for reasons I'll explain but not on here) we had the ceremony at the church and then a BBQ lunch that my mum and dad put on at their place. We only had family and a couple of close friends. So there was only like 15-20 ppl at the most. It is much better I think if the focus is on the meaning of the whole day and not what you eat or where you have it.
Good luck!

Thanks guys, some good ideas! I agree with the alcohol business.... We were thinking of a picnic type thing following the church. Our place is in the middle of reno's so not the greatest location at the moment. Thanks again! :yelclap:
If anyone else has some good ones, please add!

For Jesse's Baptism we had the service at the Catholic Church and then had a bbq at our house afterwards. We hired a spit and did the roasts, salads, desserts ourselves and we also hired a marquee, chairs and tables. Even though it was a great afternoon, I really didn't get to relax much as I kept running around making sure everyone had enough to eat and drink.
For Lucas' Baptism we hired the function room of the Warrandyte Hotel. It was fantastic. The function room was upstairs so we also had the use of the balcony which was great because we had perfect weather. We had around 40 guests and paid for finger foods, drinks and sweets to keep coming out all afternoon. My mum also hired a children's performer to come and keep the kids entertained and he was great.
I think I enjoyed Lucas' party more because I was able to relax, catch up with family members and friends and not worry about the food/drink side of things.

For Amelia's Baptism we had the ceremony at 4pm at the Catholic Church where I grew up and then had people (we only invited about 30 family and friends) back to my parents house for early evening drinks and nibbles...there was a beautiful sunset going on and I really enjoyed the night.
We (my parents kicked into the financial side) had the finger food catered by friends of the family and we provided the drinks...a bit pricey but no muss no fuss:thumbsup:

We had Rylen's Baptism at a Catholic Church just down the road from us and a bbq at our house after. We had about 40 people mainly family and work friends, everyone just chilled out in our backyard and some were inside. Df and i and his mum and my grandma did the salads and the bbq and there was plenty of chips, dips and nibbles out. We got heaps of bottles of softdrinks, juices and water so everyone could help themselves. It was a great day!!!
