Hi everyone,

I hope that all is well with everyone. I am needing some advice on what I can use to defend myself against the nasty mozzies that have come to love me! LOTS! I have just looked on the internet to see what products are safe to use or not. Apparently, RID and AEROGUARD are not safe because of the DEET components and I have recieved mixed feedback about citronella. Can anyone give me some info about what I can use. I am being driven mad by these things and I am needing comfort ASAP.....

Thanks,

Emma

Hi emm11e,
I am so sorry but I don't think there is anything at all other than long pants or maybe staying indoors altogether. Most chemicals are not good during pregnancy and although citronella, sandalwood and tea tree oils can all repell mozzies, I would avoid all essential oils during pregnancy. I know everybody is different but I have just searched the internet and can't find any alternative that is completely safe.
I am starting to worry too as I have recently been around a little girl with nits and am either really paranoid or have picked them up myself. I wouldn't know how to get rid of them safely either. Fingers crossed. :fingerscrossed:

Can you use watered down lavender oil to repel mozzies, I dont know if its safe when pregnant, but worth checking.

Noosamum, I have heard a natural way to kill nits/lice is plain old orange juice. Wet hair, rinse with OJ, leave for 10 minutes and rinse with water. Apparently it kills them. Must be pure OJ, and no name brands are meant to be ok. You then comb them out with a fine tooth comb. The OJ also breaks down the glue the nits use to stick to the hair strands.

I havent tried yet, as my DD hasnt caught them again since I heard of this.

noosa mum for nits u can use any plain cheap white (has to be white) conditioner. absolutly smother hair in it then use the nit comb. best if u do it a few times over a few days. doesnt kill just stuns them so they let go and can be combed out. ive used this method heaps of times for m,y dd and it works everytime. in fact i think it works better than solutions do. as for mozzies i have no idea

i cant help with the mozzies, but when i was pg i got head lice for the first time in my life from the kids in my class. i agree, cheap brand conditioner, completely smother and comb with a lice comb. i did it every day for a week and they were all gone.

Yep the conditioner and nit comb is the way to go. But also then blow dry your hair using as hot a heat as you can stand, this helps kill eggs....or if you have one a hair straightener is aparently even better....

Hiya!
I got one of these little things from Kathmandu today which is a mossie repeller. It makes some high frequency noise which is meant to be a deterrent for mossies. You just switch it on and it hums away (you can't hear it unless you have super powers) and totally safe for kids, pregnant people, etc.

Good luck!
